Me? I gave an extra shake-shake for "Pier Bucci - Hay Consuelo" played by Behrouz. That was my personal track of the night.

Creamer was great when I first got to Sonic - very groovy, "new"-sounding tracks. About 3:45 he went into tribal madness (which I love - but not when I'm expecting something different) playing an early 2006 tribal set (8 letters, 3 words?!?!? Welcome to 2007 John!). He made up for his 2005/early-2006 drum fixation by closing with "Kosheen - Hide U (John Creamer & Stephane K remix)" (this is one of the "best-of" tracks of all time. It's on their (Creamer and K) Bedrock compilation - one of the best compilations of all time IMO).

Behrouz was in peak form his entire set. Very little luls during his set and good up-to-date track selection. He impressed me very much from vs. last time I saw him @ Boa and more recently at Century Room. From 6:00 on wards I was engulfed by tight, driving, relentless beats. Behrouz was on fire - the music he played push you to keep dancing, moving, grooving - it wouldn't let you stop. It felt like an 8:00 AM Deep Dish set in Guv Main room - I was expecting to see the sunlight filter through a window/door (a la Guv) at any minute. Behrouz stole the night.

Overall a great night. Sonic was busy, a variety of people (NO carwash crew), lots of dressed to impress men and women and an overall party vibe. Last night was a great night out. Kudos to the Sonic folks and the party people.

John Creamer started had a little bit of a late start at about 3:30. The first 3 or 4 tracks in his set were very promising, but he kind of lost focus after that. I found that although a lot of the tracks he played were really good, his set lacked diretion and flow. He played some older tunes, some bad and some good. For some unknown reason, Creamer kept turning down the music at strange times. Does he usually do this? He didn't even really mix his last 3 tracks. What was that about? lol

All in all, Creamer was a bit of a dissapointment. With how good that Hilo set was, and what people said about him when he was at Boa back in 2005, I thought that he wasn't on his A-game.

I wasn't too upset after Creamer's performance, because really I came to see Behrouz. I was really hoping to hear a good set from Behrouz so that I could finally see why so many people hold this guy in high regard, and boy did he ever deliver.

The best way to describe Behrouz is a cross between 2002-2003 Deep Dish and Danny Tenaglia. Quite a good cross if you ask me. His set was comprised of 2002-2003 Deep Dish style dark, groovey progressive with brooding baselines, and 8am bojangled Deep Dish bangers. Like Tenaglia, he played a few housey house tracks and a good dose of vocals over fierce basslines. And like Tenaglia, the programming of his set was very "compartmentalized", with several segments dedicated to distinct sounds. Except for a few lulls, Behrouz was pretty relentless the whole morning which was a stark contrast to the other times I've seen him and how boring he's been.

Although there were a good number of people enjoying Behrouz's set, I found the crowd pretty unresponsive to his sound. I don't know what was up, but the crowd was kind of stale in that department. That said, did anyone notice the crazy amount of good dancers in there last night? There were quite a few.

Couldn't have said it better myself. My sentiments exactly. Behrouz was definately the closest thing i've heard to early morning Dish bojangled madness so needless to say, I was a happy camper. Awesome time and it was great to see everybody again!

I'm new to the whole afterhours scene but after I heard that Behrouz would be spinning I convinced my friends to give Sonic a chance as we were all still in a party mood, especially me.

My first night at Sonic was honestly undescribable. Walking into such a live crowd of people dancing and the music blaring has never felt so good. As soon as I walked in we went straight to the front and proceeded to dance non-stop. Everytime I wanted to stop dancing, I couldn't because the constant flow of amazing music just made me keep going. I was able to catch a bit of Creamers set towards the end and was wondering why he was allowing tracks to just stop and then play the next track. Regardless, Behrouz did not disappoint me at all. The constant basslines of the progressive, dark beats he was playing kept me dancing(and stopping for much needed water breaks) all night. Unfortunatly though, around 6:45, when he really started to play what I love to hear, my friends began to get tired. Trying to convince your friends to stay 10 more minutes after telling them "just a little longer" 10 minutes ago is not an easy task!

Overall my first night at Sonic was completely amazing and exceeded my expectations. There will definately be more "staying up all night and dancing" parties from here on end.

i thought the music started out good but got really boring. when a dj cuts all the music and drops a different track it really annoys me. you're a dj so do your job. i did have a great time though...lots of people i havent seen in a while and the crowd was how it should be at sonic...IMO anyway

A night to remember

Share your sentiments of course, Graham. I finally feel the club is moving in the right direction...much can be improved but much is also improving. And the main thing the club has to do is KEEP BRINGING IN INNOVATIVE DJs!!

Its comes down to what is the most important thing...when you go to a restaraunt, you expect great food. Terry, stay with me here, I'm not talking about that kind of FOOD . If the food sucks, no amount of nice silverware and mood lighting is going to keep you coming back. Same thing for SONIC...start with great DJs and promote the hell out of them...the crowd will come and rest will work itself out through Forums like these.

One beef pointed at some of you, and you know who you are...leaving because your tired is one thing...but leaving for the Zone from Behrouz's set? I question the wisdom....

As evidenced by a culmination of events that started in earnest, IMO, with the Gerber night before Christmas of which the latest installment was a depth defining mindfuck that was Behrouz's 7 layer trapze act. The people are listening, Mr. Sonic, and the word will spread fast....this is yours to win after that....

BTW, any chance someone has a bootleg of Behrouz's set from last night?

I hear that there might be a partial set recorded from 9 am to 1 am. I'm searching and will let you guys know if I find it.

I hear you man, that's one of my pet peeves. It's really unprofessional when a deejay does that..almost effortless...I'd rather hear a sloppy transition.

Interesting reviews; I'm not too upset that I missed this.

Wouldn't you rather listen to one track instead of two tracks that aren't working?

Sometimes you just have to bail from a mix! c'est la vie!

u actually should be. this is one of those parties that would have taken u a good day to put together a proper review.

Exactly. I would much prefer he just switch tracks than it sound terrible. DJ's aren't perfect human beings they can't always get the right mix. Creamer can obviously mix, and I'm sure he wouldn't do what he did for no reason.

i would rather hear the beat go off and a dj fix it. it at least proves they're earning that paycheck.

this was my first time back to sonic in awhile.. i was really turned off the place the last time i was there during the summer.. i guess i really disliked the crowd and vibe..
anyway, my gf had never been to sonic before and really wanted to check the place out, so i figured i'd give the club another shot.. i always had great times in that building while it was boa. so we went.. and to be honest the evening from start to finish was a fucking blast. i know there has been mixed reviews for this evening.. but honestly you only need 3 things for a good party..
1. good people
2. good vibe
3. good beats
sonic had all three of those last night.. i hardly saw any juice monkeys running around with their shirts off, which was a quite refreshing change.. thank god.. and please sonic take note, implement the shirt must stay on rule. it will clean up the vibe and atmosphere of your parties..
out.
ps. carey good fucking work on the bookings.. you've always have brought fresh raw talent to toronto, from the boa days and now sonic. keep up the good work!
