i use manual controls... my iso is usually around 400 and exp around +2/3 depending on the situation but that shouldnt affect the graininess i dont think... its just so grainy. looks like a 2 mp camera when you large screen it. my last camera, a nikon p2 was crisp and clear. so i think i need to bring it in. thanks mk. just needed some comparison

I've used video capture outside of clubs like @ carnival in Brazil and got pretty good sound capture from far distance but there was no bass like there that in the Guv!

djakio you say you use the sd630 for videos/promos - hows the sound quality when the bass hits? The last canon I was using the sound got distorted whenever bass hit (am I asking too much / maybe digital cameras just don't have the mic/capability to capture music at club volumes?). I just want to have some good memories captured cause I'll probably have to stop this clubbing eventually ): Would you have any video shots captured with this camera?

digi cams dont have good mics. when youre dealing with such loud bass, things get distorted like crazy

Ya...it depends on what camera you have. My SD300 has shit quality sound when it comes to clubs. But I think starting with the 600 the quality improves.

seems like most people like the 600 or 630. like me... about the mics, depends what type of quality we're talking about.. seemed to me like axim wanted something super clear and crisp which i didnt think you could get with a digi. smuncky, you have any clips i could watch, im curious about the qual

Posted by Orko on Feb-01-2007 22:47:

Sometimes I find my Canon sd110 takes better audio than some of the newer cams, because of their thinner bodies.

Does anybody else have similar experience? Maybe something to keep in mind?

Canon is the way to go I bought a S400 four years ago and its still kickin in amazing shape, with the manual settings it is teh way to go if you can get the hang of the settings.

manual setting FTW!!
but you need some seriously steady hands when doing long exposure shots without flash..

Sony dsc-m2... sick digital camera... plus records video in mpeg 4 with stereo sound thats what i use when i make videos at clubs

as far as the sound goes... put electrical tape over the mics..... it filters out the bass and keeps the highs nice .. look
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9sB45lVDjWk
thats a video i took at guv.. above and beyond last yr.. with my mic taped up lol

OH btw for the smartasses... the quality of that video is diminished by about 75% over the original due to youtubes compression settings when u upload videos to their site.

oh man, you dont even know how hard it is to try and keep a steady hand after a few beers. and it gets frustrating cuz i would take one pic then look and i wouldnt be happy with it and i would take another and another. eventually i just give up.

Those are some nice vids - what Sony is it? is it a compact Sony? The bass isn't too hard but that's the sound I can live with. Here's what I was talking about about bass distortion: http://www.sendspace.com/file/9j3l9h . Maybe that black tape trick may be the solution. Yes I'm (or whoever was taking the vid) is close to the speaker but I also took vids from back of KH away from speakers (file to large to upload) and still get distortion (was with a good Canon - can't recall model).

I read about the Pentax Optio S on another forum re. video capture(can't find the page now though and didn't bookmark) that recommended this but then read another review saying video capture was not so great. So still looking. I want to gather as much info as possible before going into a store and asking or not knowing what to ask.

sasha, i hate to ruin the fun, but those casio's are no joke....jimmy will yell you the same thing...we sold a good 50+ casio's over the christmas holidays. the EX Z600 black was our best seller by far, people just didnt want the 850 for the extra $$$, on top of that, the z600 was nice and slim, easy to use, wicked images...kicked the sony DSC-W40's ass...that thing, and all sony cameras in my history of usig them, are shit kickers...they're useful in a garbage can, thats it.

Cale is right, SD800 IS all the way, come on, a point and shoot with optical image stabilization? doesnt get much better, without getting a whole lot thicker...canon is known for the huge range of lenses, and optical quality, as well as their digital imaging "Digic" processors. Sure, the images coming from a point and shoot wont be up to par with their line of Luxury "L" lenses for professional SLR's, but the image quality on a canon point and shoot, especially one of that caliber (the SD800 IS), exceeds expectations.

please, whatever you do, dont support sony, their profits are reported to be down 94% from last year, blu ray isnt going to save them, and id like to see sony die....sooner than later. i hate sony's cameras more than anything, i have a DSC-P92, and oh my God, its as useful as a screen door on a submarine, its often a paperweight on my desk...i used their T-series camera's...junkers too....the W-series, noisy as hell, sure you can turn down ISO, but there isnt much difference between the noise at ISO 200 and 1000

Posted by mnemonic. on Feb-03-2007 05:53:

by the way....what i dont like about the zeiss lenses on those sony's...

a real carl zeiss lens, is for a professional camera...now, if an image is taken by capturing light on to a piece of light sensitive film (or sensor for that matter) the bigger professional lens would do the job better than a lens shrunk down to the size of a dime for a point shoot...really, how good can a zeiss lens be on a point and shoot, when its a lens intended for professional use...

furthermore, why i hate the T-series by sony, all the zooming/focusing is done within the body, it (the lens barrel) doesnt telescope out, go back to the point that a lens' job is to capture light, and think about that...
