I was really excited about online communities a couple years ago when i was a dumb teen idiot. Really thought something could come out of it.

Now, with many years of interacting with them, the conclusion i reached is that they're an utter waste of time. I only keep on visiting them due to habit, having a lot of free time to kill, and plain addiction really. One of these days I should just cut off my internet and spend my free time developing an alcoholic addiction on the pub, it's more productive.

Fine, if it suits you better, read every time I wrote "intelligence" as "intellect" or "smarts" or "data capacity" or whatever other term you would prefer. The semantics of the concept are not what concern me.

It took the internet to tell you that? I'm constantly reminded of it just driving to and from school and work everyday, and even moreso at work (retail).

You can't smell farts on the internet.

well, logically it could just be the people in your immediate locality that are seriously stupid. but with the rise of message boards and blogs etc its now possible to say that stupid is indeed a worldwide phenomenon

Posted by Frenchie on Feb-01-2007 22:42:

Why are you so prudely pessimistic?

i think we have far too high standards on intelligence. we're all jaded old elitists.

Re: could the internet ultimately unite us all?

no it will not cuz we're all just pixels on the screen

You'd think so, but it's not. I've traveled to San Francisco and Vancouver within the last six months. At each location I have noticed the same idiotic and stupid things taking place. I have to give points to Vancouver, however, because I noticed less of it there.

Edit: It probably sounds like I think I'm better than most people. This is my disclaimer, where I'll mention that I do stupid shit just as often as everybody else.

people from wash. are smarties

Subliminal messages give me a sudden urge for cheese. And of course I'm not perfect. Perfection sucks.

how is that pessimism? if (and i say if) i am correct in my assertion, wouldnt that actually make me a realist?

i dont think im better than people either. smarter, sure. but thats hardly the be-all and end-all of life. its far more important to be a good person than it is to be einstein.

Yeah, but the world is dumb AND full of evil mother******s. And being a bad person tends to pay off.

the internet would be great if you had to pass an IQ test before buying a modem. Would save us a lot of problems

Not just this post, just in general. You're just so negative.

hahaha. id consider myself quite the realist. if youre talking about my general attitude in the COR, then sure. we all have our pet hates, and people taking the time to type stupid stuff tends to annoy me. we all have our faults, at least i appreciate mine

I have always considered (semantically) that the most significant component of "intelligence" is the ability to reliably access information. Think about it - this is how our brain works - information is stored in our memory and we access it (hopefully) within a very small fraction of time. In this respect, the internet is only an extension of our brains - this reliable access of memory banks and vast amounts of information that no single human being could ever hope to possess. For the longest time, people who read books or even possessed a library card (and used it) were considered "smart" people - why is that? Just because you read a lot or hang out at the library doesn't necessarily mean that you are wise or smart or intelligent - it's the ready access of information that makes somebody smart. Somebody has a question? They go to find the information - this is intelligence. So the internet is a sort of outbrain information retrieval system, as far as I am concerned - things like Wikipedia and Google, they bring our collective intelligence together in a fusion that could almost define human beings as a species. Also consider that cyberspace (god I hate that word, makes me feel like it's 1995) is infinite as far as the human paradigm is concerned - it has become the space that we can reach and it is the space within. It's unfettered by cold wars and fuel crises and government funding and it reaches far beyond the domain of any collective human consciousness.

Enough with the fanciful ideas though. The thing that makes the internet both wonderful and horrible is the human component - two sides of the same coin. Idiocy, ignorance, refusal to realize information and the widespread dispersal of lies and half-truths. It's very much just like the real world, which is understandable considering that it is populated with the same creatures and exists as a social organism as well as an intellectual organ. Maybe speculation isn't the most adequate way to address this topic though - perhaps more questions are what is needed.

- Is it easier to control people over the internet? Mind and body?
- Would it be possible for us to migrate to electronics? Digital copying of our essences and immortality in cyberspace?
- Does a collective consciousness truly bring people together or does it merely push them farther apart? As individuals or as a group?
- What will the internet be 100 years from now? 1000? Will we have forfeited our bodies in exchange for a different sort of electronic causality?
- Is the internet "fake" in the sense that the world outside of it is "real"?

Pr0ps Halcyon+On+On+1.

You just earned yourself a brief mention in my blog. I think you took the completely wrong track though.

Moog's point was about access to each other and not information. That's the key.

Trance music is the *information* trojan horse than got us all in this room... but its access to each other that keeps us here.

(the preceding has been that mention)

Yeah, I thought the same thing, but rather than go back and address the original topic directly, I decided to just let my thoughts wander...

This, I think, is where the topic becomes the most interesting. Perhaps it is possible for us to be scanned and exist in a different electrical form, but this perhaps is the crux of the conversation. Social interactions are nothing more than just data access, no? Yes? This very conversation - is it just minds interacting with one another over electrical impulses in order to glean some greater understanding above current knowledge, or is it a collaboration or information and transfer of such independent wills? I suppose it has to do with whether or not you believe that mankind is in existence to develop information, or to discover information. Are we creatures on the forefront of informational creation or are we just meandering through the darkness with our theories, hoping to stumble our way upon some new breakthrough, some new finding? Before you answer though, take a step back and realize just what you have to compare our grand knowledge upon. Are we even aware, truly, of any knowledge greater than our own? Yet we somehow know of just how ignorant we are in a cosmic sense... how can this be?

I still think you are barking up the wrong proverbial tree.

To me the focus of reality was summed up perfectly in the Kurt Vonnegut book 'Timequake'. In it the main character is at a picnic or a barbecue, and there are people sitting around throwing a frisbee and eating corn on the cob or whatever, and the character says, "if this isn't good, then I don't know what is."

Posted by Halcyon+On+On on Feb-02-2007 03:09:

Man do I hate frisbee. and corn.
