So what kind of classes would I need to register for if I was interested in meterology (I'm still in my first year)?

I saw that earlier on CNN... they had the usual over-the-top action movie music blasting in the background with some waving american flags. I'm surprised they didn't link the tornadoes to terrorism.

all universities have the same basic program....however they do vary a little bit. for example, ISU is one of like 4(?) undergraduate program that REQUIRES Undergraduate Research. other universities just have that as an option/elective.

and some schools are geared more towards broadcasting meteorology (i.e. TV Weatherperson), where there are more journalism classes vs science classes.

and some schools are just plain hardcore science, like ISU was.

Colorado State offers Forensic Meteorology (at least they used to).

And various schools around the country offer varies emphases as well. at ISU/OU they were more geared towards midwestern type storms in our synoptic classes. we had maybe like 2 weeks on hurricanes. where as FSU was the opposite. If you go overseas, you'll emphasize more on their types of weather systems.

It's not a cakewalk (like many people think). The atmosphere is a very complex thing. if you want more info, feel free to pm me (i'm sure _nut_ and ang could give you more info too from their perspectives, as they are meteor gurus too)

one of the counties, i forget which one, said they didn't have any sirens, because the county was so big.

i mean, it's not like one siren per county. usually individual cities/towns/neighborhoods have sirens.

however, the person who activates them is on standby. they wait for a call...then drive to the siren....then activate it. kind of a flawed system, as if the standby was to sleep through their call....

i lived by a siren growing up....those ******s are loud. and they test them monthly.

people shouldn't have to buy their own warning system. if they want to for added protection, that's their choice. but it shouldn't be mandatory, as their local authorities are responsible for stuff like that.
