Vista has this thing called pre caching, It takes your most frequently run programs and pre loads part of it in the ram so it doesnt take as long for the program to start up. Thats why its taking 900mb of ram for you atm. You just need to adjust the settings.

reminds me of background internet accelerators back in the day

application pre-caching is such a nice idea .... to save 2.3 seconds per app launch

That's what I'm talkin' about. However, SP2 is a tad nicer.

What is so better about vista compared to XP?

Nothing significant, until 64-bit computing is mainstream.

This release is absolute shit. There's a lot of kinks in it.
You want Vista? Wait at least 8 months to a year when V.2 comes out.
Save yourselves the time and money.

No shit

precisely. XP has had thousands of problemsin the first few years, vista will be no different, until some good patches are available, i'd stay well clear. Yeah, xp has limits & can be annoying, but it does work for what it's worth

i just BOOTED FROM DVD!

Should have checked compatibility issues. The Vista is purposefully made so that compatibility is a realllll BITCH, so you'll be forced to buy a new computer.

First, gaming forces insane upgrades, now this. Even though I'm a Computer Science major out of college, I'm glad I only use my PCs for music mixing, internet/email, and other small everyday stuff. For everything else, there's Xbox.

I still have 2K Pro on CD, along with every other Windows OS. I had a great time using it, however, I upgraded to XP with a fresh install because it retains resources much better = no need to reboot, unless updates require it, and XP supports Wi-Fi.

how will 64-bit cpu's change the way we use operating systems? i've always wondered about this since it seems like all the rage these days.

it wont ever change the way we use the OS...but it has changed the RAM limits. 32bit can only address 4gb of ram. as you have noticed 1gb of ram is not uncommon these days before vista. now that vista is here 2gb will be common place soon. if 2gb is common place and everyone has IA32 cpus then they run out of options shortly down the road.
