I agree with you and your camera, Guvy all the way, nothing like being up on the box at the front by the booth and getting hit with the lazzzzzers.

ahh you're one of the people that i dont like then. i dont like when people are on that box and interrupting the path of the lasers when im trying to take a pic. GET OFF THE BOX!!

def guv for me.. but thats cuz ive never really been anywhere else outside of the country... or the province for that matter. I also appreciate sonics lighting... esp when the flood lights just light up the whole club at a build up

i think viva used to be the best in lazzzer department but then guv killed it.

Best ever is the cube lights that they use in the kool haus for Decadence and Labour of Love events over the past few years.

Every time they have those they are the best.
I like them because they don't blast into your eyes rupturing your eyeballs like when Jem_Hadar gets angry and starts beating people up.

Those panels lights i agree...lasers and strobes are too much sometimes

Guv is #1 for overall lighting and lasers but we can't forget about Republik. There lighting is very good as well differant style then the guv but impressive in it's own way.

Posted by Truepioneer on Feb-03-2007 22:47:

I thought Sonic had pretty cool lighting when I was there.

Posted by Cuzo on Feb-03-2007 22:48:

For mental lasers, guv.

For Close Encounters of the Third Kind UFO feeling, Sonic.

For sutle but very cool: Sona in Montreal used to have hige white spotlights right behind the dj, and when a track used to climax it used to be so bright and brilliant it turned the dj into a mistiquey sillouetted figure.

I heart Sona. RIP

Speaking profesionally i would have to say as far as t.O is concerned the Guv has the best laser hands down. the lighting panels you all refer to that they use for big events actually belong to Westbury and thus being rental doesn't count as that is a factor of what you can afford to rent for a single event , (the lighting we do for example at Tiesto shows is always rented).
The lighting at Sonic which I had a hand in designing i am proud to say , although I have not been connected with it for over a year is probably the most diverse and exciting to work on in T.O.

its design is a tribute to Paradise garage (as is Stereo Montreal) and is extremely dynamic. it has over 400 channels of switching /dimming as well as the very diverse product range which makes it so exciting. David wanted something as close as possible to the system that Larry Levan actually ran himself (yes the DJ also ran the lights) and to that end Sonic also has a touch screen that the Dj's can call the cues from
I really enjoyed working on it and doing the original programming along with Justin Shaefer who also works with me .

The best North American club ever has to be a tie between either The Saint which was a New york Gay club and The Palladium , which was one of Peter Gatiens Clubs.

In the The UK The Hippadrome out gunned every other club for years with its totally OTT lighting system that most clubs would have died for 1/10 of, It even had Varilites when they were a rental only item for concerts.

I would say one of the best clubs currently other than the Ibiza Superclubs would be Twilo Miami , which those of you going to the WMC will probably see.

I won't be going this year even though I have been nominated as VJ/LJ of the year again as honestly i can't be bothered with all the Drama

AS I have said before , Lights just like sound can be very subjective nad a minimalist setup such as the zone can be just as effective as an ott setup

Yeah. That place does have a great lighting system. Too bad it went to hell in terms of EDM.

Good Lighting

I think that a Good Light Show combined with good beats is the best...The Zone is alright for a bit...but I always think about the great light effects that could be accompanying the music...Not necessarily inside the zone but just in general.

after watching a lot of videos featuring lasers of the guv, I think this is my favourite...

what did everyone think of the lighting at wemf? I thought it was different, but really cool at the same time.

wemf 06 had pretty good lighting (at least on the 4-4 stage) but it was extremely dusty. i was filthy (so was my camera) when i left to go home.
i think wemf 05 in orangeville had crazy lighting. the lcd screens really added to it too. that was a phenominal stage set up.
