there's only one trader joes in manhattan and its sooo far from my apt lol - i've hit it up only a few times since but I usually go for the frozen stuff, some produce, and meats.

Posted by RJT on Feb-07-2007 15:01:

A. It seems like Trader Joes is more expensive out west than in other places, because here almost everything there is cheaper than it is at the grocery store.

2. Why does anyone even bother acknowledging "Erotic Buddha" when time and time again he's proven to be the biggest idiot on TA?

lol - no worries m8 - he's just the kind of poster who constantly comes into threads across all the forums just to piss on them for no good reason what-so-ever.

Better to just leave him be than even bother with him at this point.

Posted by itsamemario on Feb-07-2007 15:16:

god damn you guys have so cheap prices

in norway i would just get the two different types of crackers for 50 bucks lol...

Posted by Scottaculous on Feb-07-2007 15:24:

I like their $3 wine. I carry a case in my trunk for random wine tasting parties.

2 Trader Joes opened up in Atlanta. One fairly close to me. Their prices are decent but for anyone who has ever shopped in a Chinatown, it's not great.

EDIT: No Trader Joe's anywhere, in this state!!!

wait, aren't you living in Long Island now? i know for a fact there's one in Commack.

and yeah, TJ's is definitely cheaper than grocery stores around here. the jar of salsa was $1.99, jar of marinara sauce was $1.99, crackers were $1.49, sushi was $3.99, artichoke ravioli (which i totally forgot to include on my original list!) was $2.99, etc... all of that shit at Pick N Save is at least $1-$2 more.

I love TJ's. I wish they had one down in Chambana. My 2 points. Christmas peppermint bark is the best I have ever had from anywhere. Secondly, did you know TJ's is owned by Aldi?

Posted by gehzumteufel on Feb-07-2007 16:30:

they are everywhere here in southern cali. prices are about the same as the grocery store. not much difference.

Posted by lcid on Feb-07-2007 17:50:

mmmmmm yeah, prosciutto and smoked mozzarella on tuscan pane bread... FTW.

sooo.....germans own trader joe's?

We always go there in LA-

Posted by Fast Turtle on Feb-07-2007 17:55:

i was never very big on them, tended to prefer smaller family owned health/exotic food stores

I'd agree with this in general, but unfortunately the smaller co-ops/organic stores near us have two huge problems:

1. Very exclusive when it comes to membership/volunteering. Near impossible to become a member without being very close to the owners.

2. Due to not being able to become co-op members, prices are insanely high - the only non-members who can really afford to shop there are yuppies.

So in the end, for good food at better than grocery store prices, Trader Joes is the way to go for us.

Which parts of California? I know for a fact that going to Trader Joe's here in LA is more expensive than a regular super market. But the reason I go back to TJ's is because the regular food is of better quality and they have a bigger selection of healthy snack foods.

Example chicken.

If you go to the supermarket you can get one of those big bags of frozen chicken or you can get the smaller individually wrapped fresh chicken. The fresh chicken at the market is obviously better than the frozen, and sometimes the frozen isn't that much more expensive. Only problem with the supermarket is that their frozen chicken tastes like ass. It's stringy, not very tasty, and the pieces are generally pretty small. However, at TJ's their frozen chicken is bomb.com...you don't get as many pieces but it tastes a whole lot better and is probably better for you. The let down? It costs about $2 more than at the supermarket.

TJ also has a phenomenal cheese section! All kind of Spanish and French cheese and lots and LOTS of wine. TJ for president.

yeah that sucks that you guys in Southern California get raped with higher prices. everything at the one my mom goes to (in NY) is like a dollar more than it is here.

yay for cheap living in Wisconsin!

The one here in Modesto isn't that bad price-wise. Nothing too unreasonable. Last time I was there I picked up a bottle of Patron for 39. When I get paid this Friday it's off to TJ's for that Jasmine rice and orange chicken.
