Yeah personally I don't like tours, but it depends on how you like to travel. In Thailand they call tourists "buffalo people" - you get them on a bus take em somewhere let them out to pasture for a while, then herd them back onto the bus and take them to the next place.
IMO it's no way to experience a country/culture. If I want to see every museum or temple in China I can get a book on Chinese museums/temples. If I go to the country I want to experience the living culture. Which means minimising my touristy sight-seeing to a few sights and spending more time just bumming around the streets. At the end of the day it just depends on what you're after from your travels.
