I do too, when did it become a crime to be retarded?? The guy obviously has a mental problem.

America may not have some of the "hate speech" laws of Europe, but it's much more politically correct than Europe.

How is he being a retard? As far as I know, most of the people accused of 'denial' don't deny the event happened, they just question the fact and figures. Yes, denying it never happened is pretty retarted, but I don't see why this subject should be taboo. The only people I've come across who question the accuracy of the figures/events etc, are Jewish. Guess they're antisemetic too huh? I myself haven't researched this subject yet, so I'm not going to form an opinion one way or another. But considering how politicized this event is and how taboo a subject it is makes it undestandable how some of these guys would be skeptical of non-revisionist history. I really hope the the label holocaust denial isn't abused like that other one most of us are far too familiar with, and have seen plenty of unwarranted usage of it, anti-semitism. No to mention the term anti-semite has been hijacked and is completey biased in favour of only one semitic group. You do know that Jews aren't the only semites right? The semetic languages are Hebrew, Arabic, Aramaic, and maybe a few I'm forgeting. But anyone who speaks any of those is semitic and a semite! Now just Jews . So I think we can see the double standard here. Anyways, I went on a tangent there. Point is, this is another gross violation of free speech and being imprisoned for it is absolutely disgusting. And supporting his right to free speech is not the same as supporting his views, since I don't even know what they are. So don't go jumping to any unsubstantiated conlusions any of you, since a lot of you have done in the past. And frankly it's pretty annoying. That's just a general comment btw Laz, so don't throw any of that ancient technology at me (aka vinyl) lol .

That's because America is a lot more diverse and less homogenous, as long as you ignore large chunks of it lol. But you know what I mean.

I guess I should add that unlike European nations, America is a really young nation with a very short history. That factors in too.

There were hate-speech laws introduced in Victoria a few years ago, but there's no laws nationally so far as I know.

I think this is the only case to make it to trial under the new laws and with the appeals process I think it's still going:

Trying to find decent links for local news is impossible. :-/

i think most people will not support truly unimpeeded speech;, they will place limits. think for instance about the classic banned speech: yelling 'fire' in a crowded theatre, or threats of bodily harm.

but where do we draw the line? i think i'd rather have a lot of freedom even though some may be offended, instead of having less freedom so that some may spare offense.

Well, yelling 'fire' in a crowded theatre isn't exactly "hate speech," neigther are threats of bodily harm, provided the context doesn't involve ethnicity/religion/sexual orientation etc.

I feel that why too occrider, but if that "hate speach" leads to a crime and or an individual is singled out due to his/her race..... then no special circumstance should be considred in prosecution?

Nope

the reason I am so upset about this cause there is case going on here in AUstin how a gay friend of mine was followed from a bar and assaulted with her and her girlfriend. The case starts tomorrow and the focking rednecks that did it are using this freedom of speach shit to get off on a lighter sentence...... I guess he has critical thinking.

I think you should take umbrage with the fact that crimes of assault in general are getting off with light sentences than the fact that he was targeted because he was gay. If people are getting off with light sentences for committing crimes the solution isn't to pander to select groups of people and fixing the justice system for them while leaving it broken for everyone else.
