So I tend to gyrate towards guitar riffs and pummelling beats. 1200 Mics and Logic Bomb are good for this sorta sound. Juno Reactor is a must if you like these sounds. Also try Psyside, Psysex, S.U.N. Project, Goa Gil, and Ghreg on Earth. |

| Originally posted by TwistedDUO Sometimes, I like cheesy guitar riffs, though. Like I said, I'm a rocker. And in all honesty, the tracks play well for the dancefloor, too. I can't argue with that. I've played many crowds where I try to crank out some darker, more hard-edged stuff and they just don't get it. Then out come Acid for Nothing, and it's on like frenzy. The guy doesn't even know what he likes yet, and I'm certain (like many do) he'll move past the 1200 Mics phase. Just as the full-on kids move past the Infected Mushroom/Astral Projection phase. It's just fun music. I mean seriously, why does psytrance have to be broody? All genres have thier anthems, and they get the floor moving. |

For someone who is into really out there, abstract and spiritual type stuff..I just haven't found psy-trance appealing. The scene itself would definitely appeal to me, but the music itself..it just doesn't speak to me in anyway. It's good for dancing, but beyond that....don't find it enjoyable. It's something i've considered getting into, esp after watching some videos from various psy-festivals and seeing that it has quite a following. I guess I prefer more "deep" and "progressive" sound, so prog-psy is something I think I should consider. Bass and effects, and lots of it, is just not what I look for.
I guess I prefer a more "organic" sound. "Iboga" and "Digital Structures" are labels that seem to have some good music on them, but I still prefer the music released on "Tilth" and "Toes In The Sand"...melodic progressive house. I prefer melodic epic and progressive trance vs. psy trance. You know this. But as far as a genre for dancing, definitely psy trance would be a good choice, and the scene itself would appeal to me, vs the trendy and sometimes snobby attitude of the club scene (I'm not trying to generalize, it just appears this way to me, esp in the US).
Is the idea behind "psy-trance" music really..the music as more of a guide rather than the forefront? It seems that way...cause of the idea of getting into a trance, and in that case...the melodic or harmonic aspect doesn't sound (usually) as important as the beat/percussion/bass and effects. I mean i'm not saying this is right, it's just what I observe..but I would like those who are really into this music to give me some insight into this, thanks.

it's true that psytrance tries to be more "serious" when it comes to the trance aspect. The spiritual and out of the body scenarios are often refered to. The music is also shaped in that way however in recent years a more and more commercial twist have gained alot of ground within psytrance as well with artists such as Astrix, Skazi and Infected Mushroom.
However not all israelis are falling into the commercial full on trap. Sound Field is one of the groups that tries to blend in progressive sounds into his production and some melodic making it a lovely mix.

I've been listening to the latest release by these guys:
Synsyn (@ http://www.synsun.info/) - you can download a set from their site..
Pretty good stuff.
Living in Cape Town South Africa am pretty spoilt for choice with Psytrance (have been teasing BlackVortex of late
)..
Labels of note are:
The Overlords - Sundown (Ionizer remix)
Etnica - Chemical Trance
+ older man with no name tracks...
Some of my favorites are:
MFG
California Sunshine
Chi A.D.
Etnica
Pleiadians
Hallucinogen
Miranda
Prana
Total Eclipse
Transwave and a lot more but I am tired so thats enough I think
I'm going to emphasize Man With No Name, Doof, Juno Reactor and Hallucinogen. But one duo I've not seen mentioned so far is X-Dream.
Aaaaaah.....psytrance!
Now we're talking my language! I'm a bit of a self-proclaimed psy/Goa collector, definitely with a soft spot for the Goa sound. Psy and Goa are so widely varied in their styles that one of the posters was correct: your musical tastes and background will make a big difference in what appeals to you in the genre.
Following are some of my recommendations. For most, if not all, you can listen to music samples ranging from 2 to 4 minutes at www.saikosounds.com. That's where I do a fair bit of research before buying anything. These samples should give you a fairly rough idea of some of the stuff floating around out there to see if any of it piques your interest. What I am not familiar with is the darker, techier and more minimal styles.
Goa: circa 1994 - 1998
V/A - Distance to Goa Volume 4
V/A - Tantrance 6
Doof - Let's Turn On
Green Nuns of the Revolution - Rock Bitch Mafia
Hallucinogen - Twisted
Hallucinogen - The Lone Deranger
Pleiadians - Identified Flying Objects
Prana - Cyclone
Transwave - Helium
X-Dream - We Created Our Own Happiness
Nu-skool Goa: Goa renaissance (hahaha...I couldn't resist)
V/A - Apsara
V/A - Twist Dreams
Khetzal - Corolle
Ka-Sol - Fairytale
Psytrance
OOOD - Free Range
Voice of Cod - We Are Free
Atma - Between Good and Evil
Derango - Tumult
Progressive
Frogacult - Something for Sundays
Mid - downtempo
Younger Brother - A Flock of Bleeps
Ott - Blumenkraft
Shpongle - Are You Shpongled (the best trip music of all time)
The best thing to do if you are interested in quality psy is to start poking around sites like psynews.org or isratrance.com and reading the reviews section. Just like any genre of electronic music, you have to sift through a lot of crap to find some incredible gems.
