So then what kinda stuff do you listen to? I feel like I've been in the minority here ever since I kinda stepped away from trance late last year. No one ever seems to know about the producers I mention. One of 'em is right on the cover of this month's BPM magazine:



There are at least 10 more sick indie label producers featured in this issue as well. Its refreshing to hear producers who are innovative enough to blend and blur the lines between music genres, and kinda mix things up so that their sounds aren't so predictable.


My bad, Colibri, for not keeping with the topic. As far as what I like about 'good trance', I'd have to go with the high energy. I'm not sure I've heard music that's more uplifting, or that has more potential to be uplifting/euphoric than some good bangin' trance. Moreover, it takes after the origins of trance in music in India circa 1700 AD when musicians held Sitar concerts, sometimes for a few days straight. The Sitar, being the only instrument, if I'm not mistaken, that can play an infinite number of pitches, was able to produce the melodic, but repetative (and sometimes droning) sounds that kept the audience and even some of the musicians in an almost meditative state for hours on end.



'Trance' as far as modern music is concerned, of course, referrs to the amount of repetition there is of specific sounds or beats in each track. Interestingly, steady repetition mimics what a person's brain waves do when they're asleep (a sort of mental reset button if you will). With trance music, it's much more difficult to be creative without leaving the genre. So, if one thinks that a few quality trance tracks are a bit fluffy and superficial, he'll probably think that most are. But IMO every genre kind of serves its own purpose. The indie-rock-electro-tech-house-hip-hop-whatchamacallit that I'm into now is awesome, but it won't ever be able to do what trance does, and likewise, trance won't ever be able to do what it does, so I'm kinda learning to pick and choose the producers I see, and take things in small doses so that I don't completely lose interest in any one genre. As far as the evolution of my musical pref goes, I'm trying to stay away from opening up to new sounds, then cutting myself off from old ones. Just because I find jazz exciting doesn't mean I should stop listening to classical you know?

i guess i can sorta see what you mean... yes we used similar sounds to other tracks.. including a piano and whatnot.... but all our melodies are original. never did we listen to another track and be like... lets modify that melody to fit our ears and nor have i ever heard other trance tracks that use a cello and oboe as the main lead (you most likely didn't know it was cello/oboe). and with u saying trance is as easy as picking a preset, thats totally untrue. my co-producer and i spent countless days trying to change parameters so the raw sounds produced by the synths actually sound good. that track actually took almost a year to make. if you pay close attention to all the sound effects, they were all made from scratch. none of that using fx samples. we would take a clean sound, stretch it, throw on plugins, reverse it... do all of that stuff. now pay close attention to the # of layers that is on the track as well. how many would u count or can u pick out? probably like 15 or so... now u may be surprised when i tell u that track had up to 60 different parts. also how many tracks have u heard that is constantly changing from beginning to end. thats the style that andy and i stuck with in the beginning because we wanted the track to change and evolve as it went along. we didn't pick a simple repeatable riff that built up once.. broke down, and built up again. not one melody in the beginning can be heard towards the middle/end of the track.

now it may sound like i'm defending myself a bit much... and its not that i don't take constructive criticism... its just that what you are criticizing just really has no basis because its completely false. i guess if you said something like, you guys used trance sounds that other tracks have used before... i'd say ok... thats mostly true. but saying its a ripoff and that trance is easy to make kinda irritates me. you really have no idea what it takes unless if you are sitting there actually making it yourself.

For me its simple. Besides trance, i love progressive and house as well.
Trance just makes me FEEL the best.
ONLY trance gives me goosebumps, that says a LOT imo

I agree. When I took an interest into production at first I said to myself ah this is going to be a piece of cake and then when I actually got all of the programs and saw how much detail goes into every note and how all of the sounds had to be contantly tweaked to perfection I started to loose hope and get very frustrated.

It wasnt until a few other producers from on this board took me under they're wing and showed me some proper direction that I really started understanding what it was all about.

hai lee...you are missing the point...i said you are very talented but at the same time you should be pushing in a new direction...

i guess i can see what you mean about innovation... but i have to be honest with myself and realize that at this point in time.. i'm still a beginner/noob to producing compared to some people like.... BT, Shiloh, Benz & MD, Orkidea. its so hard to innovate when it takes me hours upon hours just to get something decent out of my computer. i'd definitely love to push boundaries eventually with my music... but at this point... i can't really consider that option just yet. gotta get the basics down before i can go above & beyond.. (no pun intended)
