pretty much this, but not to the extent of laughter. Its a subtle show of appreciation to the funnah.

The other instance is if I don't like the person I'm talking to and they try to make a joke and its not funny at all.

As far as away messages go, I think it's important to use them to their extent. I often get annoyed when I see lyrics or something that's blatantly uninformative. That said, I often have my away message saying "not around... call" or something like that because I'm often too lazy to type my actual whereabouts.

I use it for something that's mildly amusing, but not 'haha' funny.

I see it as a laugh. Like on family guy Quagmire goes "Heh, all right!

on the topic of away messages, whats really annoying is when you are set to "away" and people leave a shit load of messages there to annoy you....

hello

are u there

msg me when u get home

r u home yet

ok maybe not

I dont use "Heh" i use "hehe" that is a little "hehe" as it is written. it is like a smile, but tonal wise

it is a friendly atempt to substitute the "" smile

I hate away messages that give you the whole night planned out.

"gotta work, then i dunnoo, maybe grab some food with some people, then go booze with some girls, who knows when i'll be home, so just call me"

i always translate that as

"work, then go out to eat with my work friends, then sit at my best friends house and hope we can get a girl to come over, and i'll most likely be home by 9:30"

Proper.

I always interpret it as insecurity and that the person is trying to prove something. It's fucking lame beyond belief.

That's like saying you can read too much into body language. It's communication all the same.

+1.

I man c'mon, is it necessary to put( and I've seen this exact msg) :

"gone to chels and then megs, drinks with the boys, clubs, home and then work"

"Gone out" would have been just as fine.

Yeah, but it's only one small aspect of communication. Lot's of people I know rely on IMing for business/pleasure (as opposed to using a cel phone or wtvr) and often times leave little away messages about wher they are or where they're going that night and is actually a realy convinient way to do things.

I don't have a cel phone because they are too goddamn expensive so if I really need someone to leave me a message I may change my nickname to " X leave me a message pls " or similar, it's really just functional.

I do however agree that some people who leave away messages would fall under the other category

I'm talking about the people who seem to have entire conversations with themselves in their MSN custom text or away message. Does anyone honestly care?

Or the ones that put "working 12 hours today... my job sucks " in their text. Yeah, that's gonna make me want to talk to you, you whiney miserable fuck.

Posted by Allied Nations on Feb-27-2007 18:05:

Some people's I care about, others I don't.
