if you're trying to hit up a beach, my favorite is encinitas. don't know if that's too far north for you though. otherwise mission bay or coronado should do the trick.

True That. Or take Sea World Drive West (off the I-5)until you hit Sunset Cliffs (marked well by signs)
Torry Pines State Park has some nice mild beach cliff hiking too, with hang, and paragliders overhead

I might end up going to the 4 Strings show now..

just thought to ask, but thats really great news, thx.

I completely agree. You should really try to go to the beach and watch the sunset. I do it a couple times a week...it just makes life way better.
hahha I'm so cheesey

Thanks Yeah, I'm sure they allow cameras in there, I saw tons of people with p&s cameras last time I was there.

Here's a sunset pic at Mission Bay near Seaworld

Things to do..

Sea World
Zoo
Wild Animal Park (Personally, I like it more than the Zoo)
Balboa Park museums (Model Train museum is quite cool if you're into that)
Mexican food, shopping, and some history in Old Town
Day trip to Julian for Mom's Apple Pie and tour of the gold mine
Golf @ Torrey Pines (or one of the other many, less known courses)
Shopping in "The Village" of La Jolla with a walk along La Jolla Cove and food at any of the oceanview restaurants, take a kayak tour of the sea caves (btw, the water is COLD)
Beaches, beaches, beaches!
Belmont Park - Ride the rollercoaster and get a drink or three at The Wavehouse (location for an MTV spring break year) - watch guys and gals surf the standing wave (or crash on it, as the case may be). Rent bikes or rollerblades and go down the boardwalk. Check out the hot bodies everywhere.
Mission Bay - rent a sailboat or a kayak
Shopping and dining in "The Village" of Del Mar
Visiting Coronado, but not sure what to specifically point you towards - renting bikes, visit the Hotel Del Coronado
Visit Mexico (Tijuana.. blech..)

and of course

eat, drink, and dance in the Gaslamp district!

If you've got any specific interests other than trance/dance, we can give pointers..

wow this is an awesome list.

well which areas would take a full day to explore...not there for very long so i wanna plan it out. Coronado def sounds like it would be really great to check out but im assuming that will take the majority of a day to go see...

Posted by serch54 on Feb-28-2007 18:08:

This might seem silly but I just did this with some out of town friends, so the breakdown is fresh in my head
You can walk around a few blocks of Coronado near Hotel Del to see some really cool neighborhoods (1 hour), Go to Hotel Del: check out the shops, get a badass martini at the Babcock Bar, eat at any of the 3 restaraunts (2-3 hours), enjoy the beach and grounds (1 hour); The Landing Marketplace on the other side of the "island" is cool, but if you hop back over the bay and go to Seaport Village downtown, I think you'll enjoy it a bit more. (you can also start at seaport Village and ferry over to Coronado, rent some beach cruisers and ride to the Hotel, to fill up more of the day)

It usually sets around 5: 30 - 5: 45, but it's always nice to get their a little earlier.
I hope it doesn't rain while you guys are here!

You could put a couple of those things together.. If you're looking for coastal beach culture, you might want to do the Mission Beach/Belmont Park/Wavehouse from 11-2, head up to La Jolla and do the La Jolla Cove/dinner/boutique shopping thing. Then down to the gaslamp for dessert at Ghiradelli followed by drinks and clubbin'..

Mission Beach/Pacific Beach is the young, beach bum so cal culture area - roller blades, skateboards, and cruiser bikes, while La Jolla is the elegant, rich, upscale and beautiful coastal area. (La Jolla's mentioned in a Beach Boys song if you haven't heard of it for other reasons).

Obviously places like the Zoo or Sea World are full days by themselves.

Another thing that's downtown is the Midway museum and the Star of India, which aren't far from Seaport Village (a long, but pretty walk along the bay). I haven't done the Midway but it sounds pretty cool if you've ever wanted to tour an aircraft carrier. The Star of India is the world's oldest active ship, built in 1863.

As far as weather, I believe a high pressure system is building and we're supposed to have beautiful weather, highs in the low 70s. Be aware that the temp drops with the sun.
