Sure they had socialism going on. They weren't really eastern or western. And they were making socialism work better than most eastern bloc countries.

Well, if we're gonna be nitpicks, Croatia as a part of Yugoslavia was a pure former eastern block country between 1945 and 1948, since it was a part of the comintern during that period. You may say it's the first one that splintered away, because in 1948 it stepped out of the informbiro (which was based in Belgrade until the split, btw). It did not, however, adopt a capitalist system, it remained a socialist country, although admittedly with much more freedom than most other eastern countries. So while you may say it's specific in that aspect, it is still close enough to be comparable, especially since the war of the 1990s pushed the society and economy back to the level of the eastern block. Aside from that, Yugoslavia bordered a couple of eastern block countries, hungarian border is only 80km away from here. And if we're really gonna be nitpicks, yes, I have travelled to Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, and Czech Republic. So there, happy now?
