BUT I want the USA to be good in 20 years, not South Africa or some country that isn't the USA!!!!

I don't really have a problem with who hosts it, just the automatic entry to the host country, thats dumb... sure its their home country, but its the WORLD CUP... if your team sucks, you shouldn't get an automatic spot, you should have to compete like all the rest of the world... no more freebies!

then FIFA might as well just keep it in the big European nations and Brazil/ARgentina because they are the only countries who regularly qualify. How can you NOT have the host nation take part in the tournament? Come on man, that doesn't make any sense. They already took away the defending champions' automatic entry, which actually was a good idea...right up there with no kicking the ball back to the goalie. The only two things FIFA has done right that I can remember.

I can

it shouldn't be a problem for the host state to qualify on their own...

should only be an issue, when you got a South Africa... thats my problem... therefore, hosts should qualify like everyone else, for example, Trinidad and Tobago are never going to host/get an automatic spot...

Look, how shit it'd be to have an world cup in your country, and your team not in it? Cause if there is a qualification, there's always a mathematical chance of missing out. It's only extremely unlikely for a select few like USA, Mexico, Brazil and Argentina since they have lots of qualifying spots and not very challenging competition - but for teams in Europe and even Africa things are a lot different. In 2002 Holland and Czech Rep missed out, in 1998 we (Portugal) had a good team and were out, in 1994 even England and France didn't make it! Last year Cameroon and Nigeria missed out in Africa.

When there's 32 places avaiable and even utterly shit teams like Trinidad & Tobago and Saudi Arabia get qualified only due to the low competitivity of their confederations, it makes perfect sense to reserve a place to the host nation.

^^^^ I totally agree.

You can't have the nation that puts on the tournament (at considerable cost it must be said) also not participate in it! That's ludicrous Ecnal. Nobody would go to the games and the media attention wouldn't be the same.

Not all the time, but i honestly believe Europe should get every 2nd World Cup / 8 years

what about the suggestion (albeit BRIEF) by the Americans to change the game into 4 "quarters" because it would be better for TV during the 94 World Cup!!! I've nothing against Americans (usually) but they tend to dominate and fuck around with things. Look what is happening to the NHL! Shootouts, delay of game penalties, increasingly diminishing the physical aspects of the game (you can't even touch a gu in front of the net anymore without being called for obstruction!) All this was done to make hockey sell better in the USA.

So, I say the less American influence on football, the better. And I don't mean that as any great insult either, by the way.

Why?

Europe already has 2nd most important footy tourney in European Championships.

I think every 12 yrs is fair.

Only a select few countries outside of Europe can actually host it! Who really has the ability to do so? the USA, Mexico perhaps, Japan/Korea, Australia maybe...Brazil and Argentina don't have the stadiums but will most likely get it anyway. Those select few countries outside of Europe would be getting the World Cup far more than any of the European nations, etc. If the USA gets the Cup before ENgland, for example...considering which of the two hosted it last....that's not fair.

And, at least with a European World Cup, you know it will be run efficiently, with good crowds, good stadiums and good security. I'm sorry but neither S.Africa or Brazil convince me of their safety...

all this talk reminds me I have to start planning my mid-life crisis. Was planning to take 6 months to drive from london to capetown in time for the world cup. Place I always stay there for work told me that someone tried to book the entire hotel for a month 10 minutes after SA was announced as the hosts.

SA has it's problems, building of the new stadium in capetown being the most obvious given they cannot agree on where it will go yet. That said, they've run cricket and rugby world cups before, and have no shortage of stadiums used for rugby that are suitable.

Morocco should have hosted instead of fucking south africa. At least Morocco is growing in terms of economic growth. South Africa, ha.. they can hardly keep the people from car jacking you in front of a police station while the police watches and smiles.

what's worse? Giving undeserving countries the World Cup or all this recent talk of elminating draws from the game in favour of resolving every match with a FUCKING PENALTY SHOOTOUT?

Madness!
