me too!!! one day. i love the fact that the stations have so much cool architecture and stuff in them.

i also love the tube. the ttc is so ghetto in comparison.

This was interesting to read!

HA! TTC, listed? That would be the biggest joke evaarrr!

And Montreal's subway blows ass. It's smaller, not as wide..it smells a lot...the only thing that is nice are the actually stations inside. They're nice, they have TV screens in some if not most, just more spacious.

probably the most beautiful in terms of design and architecture.

i think london's is #1 because it is the oldest and the largest..

edit: moscow's is not much smaller

True enough. London's is number one probably b/c of those reasons but the art/architecture is still very cool. Not as artsy (museum style) wise as Moscow's from what I hear but still cool.

during the next couple of weekend, u can view it due to construction at bay station. the train will pass by the "secret" station and go to museum.

here are some videos taken from last weekend.

Passing westbound through Lower Bay, a slow pan of the platform

A shorter video of the trip from Yonge to Lower Bay, taken from the rear of a westbound train

here is the official link to the ttc.

Compared to the TTC, it's world class. I was able to pay $103/month for a pass that got me Montreal and Laval, and even the GO-Train equivalent.

Comparing my drive to / from work at 30-45 minutes, the bus/subway combo was 45 mins to an hour consistently. I was pretty impressed with the whole setup.

The subways in Paris and Tokyo are insane, and so well organized and thorough. Tokyo's gets really crowded but that shouldn't surprise anyone. I always took their surface light-rail, subway equivalent when I was there since I could use my rail pass on it and didn't have to pay an extra fare.

North America really has missed the boat when it comes to effective, mass public transit.

great thread fonkee!

this is the subway map for seoul, korea. absolutely massive. makes toronto look miniscule. i got lost in it a few times and would not have been able to make my way around if it wasn't for my relatives

the city of seoul is around 20+Million people, roughly 7times the population of Tdot, so i guess their subway would scale

Posted by Truepioneer on Mar-01-2007 21:59:

The metro in Bilbao, Spain is quite impressive considering the city's poppulation is about 350,000.

I think it still considered the most modern metro system in the world. Opened in 1999, if I remember right.

And a sleek tram

One very sexy transportation system

I'd like to add to this thread of transit systems better than the TTC.

Gdansk, Poland

Tube Construction

Posted by Truepioneer on Mar-01-2007 22:19:

^Looking quite good.

Seems like most large ciites and even small in the EU are expanding there transit systems (Madrid, London, Gdansk, Bilbao, Paris and so on)

I remember reading in The Star last week that Madrid has opened more km of metro lines in the last 15 years than we have all together.

btw. this might interest some of you ..

what "once" was... Toronto sometimes really is a tragedy when you think about it .. a city with so much potential, but lacking a true vision in its leadership ..

TRANSIT TORONTO SUBWAY PAGES

Feature Photo:

This photograph by Michael Proulx shows his work of art, Arc en Ciel, in the hey day of its operation. The art installation, which opened atop Yorkdale station with the rest of the Spadina subway, was not properly maintained and eventually dismantled at the artist's request -- a symbol of the decay that has set into the system due to funding problems and deferred maintenance. More of Michael Proulx's photographs, along with a history of art on the TTC, can be found here. With the TTC considering makeovers of other subway stations, one hopes that they come with a maintenance contract that keeps these installations in the condition they were installed in.

Yeah, cuz they liked Prague's so much, they fcuked the Czechs, stole theirs during the occupations, and brought them to Moscow. The Russians gave the Czechs their old shitty subway cars. Look it up, it's true.

Madrid's was awesome... Beer vending machines EVERYWHERE!

...and Japanese subway chick groping FTW!

Posted by FunkyCrew on Mar-01-2007 23:34:

Moscow's subway looks like a museum compared to futuristics of other subways!

AJ, how on Earth did they steal the subway cars?!

Unless you're planning on spending your vacation in the subway, go to St. Petersburg instead.
