What? So a team will have to run ALL their tyre compounds on 1 track? That's retarded - different tracks require different compounds.. why would anyone run a hard compound on a track that's better suited for a soft compound tyre...

Arrggghhh FIA, you're eventually going to make me stop watching F1 if you implement any more of these nonsensical regulations. Who thinks up these things?!?!

Ah...no. Knowing what underwear a basketball player wears, is like knowing what underwear a F1 driver wears.

Honestly, as somebody who has watched for years, I would love to be able to know what compound the teams are on, myself. I find that a lot of the time the ITV guys are just too slow in calling some of the action on the track, and I believe I am smart enough to make my own conclusions.

This rule is good, and I am glad they didn't just paint the side walls a different colour. The reasoning was correct, as it would have been too expensive. Each team's spies will easily be able to figure out which teams are running which compounds, so in terms of giving away secrets, I really don't think it applies here.

In terms of running each different compound in the race weekend, I do not think they will have to do it during the race. They will most certainly have to test each compound during the weekend, which will help them determine which is the best for their driver/car/track combination.

The FIA has to make the sport more accessible to the viewer, because it has been heading in the opposite direction for a long time. F1 is very secretive, and I agree that in certain aspects it must be so. The fact that a fan cannot easily go racing on their spare time, like playing a game of hockey, means they have to be more involved in the 'show'. The FIA must also be worried with the recent success of the A1 series, which makes their teams much more accessible to the fan. TV ratings determine F1's finances and chances of success, why not introduce measures to try and entice fans to watch? F1 got boring for a while, they have to do something to 'save' the sport.

sorry guys, i might've made a mistake regarding different compounds having to be used in 1 single race.

As has become customary in Formula One, a new season would not be a new season without a few rule changes to contend with.

Fortunately, the powers-that-be within the sport finally discovered a winning qualifying format last year, and this remains the same for 2007.

But there are a few other alterations, so let's brings you up to speed.

* The most important change in the regulations for 2007 is that all teams will be supplied by one tyre manufacturer - Bridgestone.

The Japanese company will supply two specifications of its Potenza tyre at each grand prix, and each driver will have 14 sets at his disposal (seven per specification).

A driver may use a maximum of four sets on the first practice day and the remaining 10 on the Saturday and Sunday.

In dry conditions, both specifications must be used during the race.

In the wet, a driver has a total of seven sets of tyres available - four wet-weather and three extreme-weather.

* The two Friday practice sessions - one in the morning and one in the afternoon - have been extended from 60 minutes to 90.

The teams can send out a maximum of two cars for each session, and they must be driven by either the two race drivers or by a nominated test driver.

The identity of the drivers must be announced by 4pm the previous day.

* The engines must again cover two race weekends, although this only applies to the Saturday and Sunday.

The Friday is no longer subject to this regulation, which means engines may be changed ahead of Saturday practice.

* There is also a new safety car rule, specifically that as soon as the safety car moves on to the track, the pit lane is closed.

It is only opened again once all the cars have lined up behind the safety car.

In addition, lapped drivers then have to overtake any drivers ahead of them who are on the lead lap. They also overtake the safety car, drive an additional lap and rejoin the field at the back.

The safety car stays out until at least this process is completed.

So you do have to use both compounds in the race. I have no idea what the FIA is trying to achieve by making that mandatory.

i think it's a desperate way to create more opportunity for mistakes in the race.

im guessing you're speaking of 2005, which was two years ago when they had engine failures more frequently, in 2006 mclaren dumped the mercedes-ilmor engine, for a 100% mercedes engine...mind you those ilmor engines are the same ones that made mika champion, and kimi 2nd place in 2003...

the mercedes engine proved way more reliable...2 engine failures in 19 races over the whole team...

kimi's failure in monaco was a heat shield fire...de la rosa had a fuel pump problem, and i believe it was montoya who had an electrical problem, those things have nothing to do with engine reliability...furthermore, the MP4-22 was in development prior to the MP4-21, they had tons of time to debug the 2007 car of any potential reliability issues they would uncover during the 2006 season, with 2 engine failures over 3 drivers, i'll say there's not much room for improvement, and that kimi needs to stop drinking...even michael schumacher's ferarri had an engine failure in 2006, 1 failure, over two drivers, over 19 races, to go around shouting mclaren is blowing engines left and right and that in 2006 they had a reliability issue is an overstatement.

haha...i know what you mean.

Absolutely hated them (was never a big fan of Schumacher even though he was absolutely amazing)..but Kimmi had a solid race from start to finish...
Good job on Hamilton too! Great to see him come in 3rd..

Posted by Orko on Mar-18-2007 16:53:

I have been waiting for this day for 6 years.

Kimi finally has a car he can just push with, lean on, one that wont break half way through the race, or worse yet, on the last lap.

The car does matter, but in reality Schumi didn't have the best car the last two years, Alanso did.

Alanso was soundly beaten by his team mate. If it was not for the mid-race traffic that Hamilton ran into, he probably would have come out a head of Alanso after the second round of pit stops.

Kimi had the fastest lap by over a second!

Kimi Rikknen 1:25.235
Fernando Alonso 1:26.314

(copied from my post in the sports forum)

Boring race, but a good one nonetheless.

Kimi walked away from everybody, including Massa (even though Massa was stuck behind the Honda's for most of the race).

Button should have let Rubens past early on. He was holding them both up and once Rubens got past he was 2s / lap faster. Stupid.

Great mature drive from Hamilton. He kept his shit together even while leading in his first ever race. Alonso only passed him in the pits. I don't think he was fast enough to actually pass Lewis on the track!!! This kid will be champion, it's only a matter of time. Good for McLaren to bring both cars home too, given their shite reliability from last year.

BMW will be 3rd this year after a close race with Renault. I'm calling it now. BMW looked very good (not sure what happenned to Kubica though since I was watching the race in Dutch ).

Bernie needs to figure out how to get some passing back into F1 since there wasn't much of it at all here. You could see cars getting out of shape mid-corner when they got within .5s of eachother. How can you expect to get a good run on a guy when you can't get closer than .5s and there is now a 19k rev limit and an engine freeze from last year (so no newfound power)???

Does this mean that if we support Ferrari now we've crossed over to the DARK SIDE ? Or are we just giving props to Kimi?

Props to Kimi lol

I don't think i'll ever cross over to support Ferrari...

I was excited to watch the race after the off-season. A lot of new stuff to see. Maybe I was too excited for the first race of the season, because I was somewhat disappointed.

There was almost no overtaking at all in the front of the pack.

Posted by mute79 on Mar-19-2007 13:36:

props to lewis hamilton! he'll be a good one

Posted by stren on Mar-19-2007 14:45:

Hamilton is teh shit, I wish him all the best. I'm glad he got a 3rd place in his debut, i'm a bit disappointed Kubica had gearbox problems that stopped him from being 4th

one of the commentators made the funniest statement during the podium part..."Hamilton to F1 is Tiger Woods to Golf"...LOL

why? cos hes a homie??lol

haha...I remember that, lol. It must be for "other" reasons rather than the homie aspect haha.

Posted by mnemonic. on Mar-19-2007 19:20:

i think quote of the race weekend was made on Speed network, now, i dont know who of the three commentators said what but im just gonna say it was steve matchett and bob varsha:

Steve: "I dont understand how could Honda Have spent 320 million on a car just to make it a second and a half slower than last year's car...i mean they could have bought 15 pounds of lead for 10 bucks, and had the same effect, i think they should retire this car to testing, and revert back to last year's RA106 chassis"

Bob: "wait a second....they can't....super aguri is borrowing it !!!"

(said during qualifying)

whats a really cool fact about lewis hamilton is that he very well has the ability to be youngest Race winner in F1 history, a record first set by kimi i believe, just to be beaten by alonso, in (i believe) the same season.

as for my race review...

Tyres:

i actually like the new tyre rule, it makes it more exciting, when we cant see whats being put on in the stops, we're left to assume what compound they're on...we know the bridgestone soft compound grains heavily, and those guys will have much less grip, this new rule of using each compound can decide strategies and define how a race turns out, definately interestting

Red Bull Gives DC Wiiiiings:

massive collision from DC and Alex Wurz, definately a brave move from DC, but alex wouldnt give up that position so easily. Luckily for Alex he braked in time, the onboard view was nuts...imagine seeing that through the eyes of the driver...

Kimi drove well for ferrari, can't really gather anything special from his performance, and quite honestly, i expected more from the other ferrari, felippe massa. the commentators did say it was very schumacher like of him to 'protect the car with cotton', knowing he wouldnt win, try not to hit anyone and go for points, i think if he pushed a little harder earlier, he couldve taken over 5th from fifi.

Lewis hamilton impressed, hands down...i believe it was someone in this thread who said he's the one rookie with his head screwed on the best...definately exceeded all expectations from start (and what an amazing start that was by hamilton, moving to the outside in traffic) to finish.

oh, and kimi showed that in ideal situation he can be very monotonous and say ideal situation a lot, and how he was in ideal situation in an ideal race....i wish he showed a bit more excitement the iceman is a bit tooo cold.
