One of South Africa's top DJ, Ryan Dent, refuses any promos and does all the digging himself. I think it really does make a difference and you learn to appreciate tunes more. I used to treat my vinyl like gold and played everyone to death. Now that Beatport is around and much cheaper, I'm getting 5x the tunes I used to and don't play any of them as much as I should. Sometime I buy tunes and have never played them out...

one of things about mp3 sites is that most people will buy in mass which means u won't find that "quality" (?) time with each track. try to buy like 20 or less at a time. it might help. but it does get addicting with cheaper price tags and u can just keep adding to your online crate without the worry of anything selling out.

Some of the greedy fucks are trying to put the prices up again, some new releases are �1.99 per track

Back on topic, from what I can gather from a well respected active DJ they get given a lot of promo tracks & any which they don't get at promo stage they often get given by the producer if they ask for it ...or the DJ's give each other tracks. From what I know they also browse/purchase from online stores & of course many of them will probably know the people who run the mp3 stores anyway... Plus many of them will produce their own stuff to test on the crowd - unfortunately a lot of great tracks just never see the light of day.

Sasha used to get his records from Massive records in Oxford. What Massive used to do with professional or semi professional Djs. The shop would receive the records. The one they felt the DJ mite be interested in they would post to the DJ, who would listen to them and post back the ones they didn't want with the check for the ones they wanted. Whether Sasha payed for his records is anyone's guess. However with digital most of them shops are closing down these days

Sasha once lost his records at the airport. So he rang Massive who put them in a large bin outside the back of the shop. So he could pick them up on the way to his gig that night, leading to a very obvious joke about the music he plays

These days i doubt many top Djs pay for music

People like Judge Jules employ somebody to go through all the promo cds and vinyls they receive and pick out the ones the DJ is most likely to play, god I'd love to have that job.

Someone I know had the job of archiving Jules's vinyl collection, nice!

From what I've seen, the biggest DJs are not interested in buying, digging, hunting, looking, or scouring the net for the best records.

They're more interested in increasing their status as big-name DJs and improving their status as actual musicians, so what they're likely to play are only tunes that they've created or remixed, or tunes from whatever label their affiliated with.

You know, for their art n stuff.

What pisses me off is the general consensus that all DJ's have to play new material....I prefer DJ's that play a mixture of old and new....

ok you probably like Jules, but what about the job to pick tunes for a dj you think has a shitty taste? that'd be weird
