...and MP3s in general
1995-1998
Got into Chicago House music after buying a mix tape from a kiosk at a nearby mall, as well as listening to a couple of records my cousin had at the time.
1999-2002
Got introduced to Euro dance music from a friend of mine, so I bought a couple of mix CD's from local dj's. Around the same time I walked into a store at the mall that was playing this different sound I hadn't heard so I asked what was playing and it turned out to be a mix CD that they got from a kiosk inside the mall. The CD had tracks like Mauro Picotto - 'Like This, Like That' (On Air rmx), Microbots - 'Cosmic Evolution' (Dj Scot Project rmx), and Barthez - 'On the Move' which really got my attention. I also bought another CD from another local dj that had tracks like Derb - 'Derbus', Voodoo & Serano - 'Blood is Pumpin', Cosmic Gate - 'Exploration of Space', and Cosmic Gate - 'Melt To The Ocean' all which were labeled here in Chicago as Progressive music.
Late 2002-2003
I bought a copy of FIFA 02 for the PS2 and there was this track that kept playing from time to time during the game, so I looked at the credits and found out it was Dj Tiesto - 'Flight 643'. I also bought this mix cd from a local dj that had Paul Oakenfold - 'Southern Sun' (Tiesto rmx) and Dj Tiesto - 'Lethal Industy', so in early 03 the same local dj made another mix CD which had the tracks Bedrock - 'Heaven Scent' (rmx), David Forbes - 'Answers', Aalto - 'Rush' (Super8 vs. Orkidea rmx), Solar Factor - 'Urban Shakedown', and Motorcycle - 'As The Rush Comes' (AVB rmx) which just blew me away. I also picked up a copy of Tiesto's Nyana CD.
2004
I picked up a copy of Armins A State Of Trance 2004 CD as well as Universal Religion 2004 Live from Amnesia, and from that day on I was completely hooked on Trance and still love it to this day...
I would also say that having access to the internet led me to trance since I used to listen to RUSH on Nova 96.9.
Cosmicman - I Love You
I think this was the track that really sparked my interest back in the day.
Pot. Literally.
I'd been into electronic music (old "north american electro" [
] records from the 80's and early 90's, a bit of euro, and loads of house) since I was a youngster, but never really got into "trance" specifically until I needed to drive to Madison to pick up some pot. On the way back, my best friend put on Resident: 2 Years of Oakenfold @ Cream, and I was pretty much hooked by the time "Blue Fear" was mixing into "Shine."

always had a taste for electronic music. grew up on funk and disco...as well as the synth pop bands from the UK. also a huge fan of bjork, tori amos, tricky, cj bolland and orbital in the early 90's.

I listened to some EDM since 1995 but what really got me into it was:
Drugs + spring break in South Beach in 1999 + Oakie's 1999 EM world tour
I grew up with electronic music being played in my home occasionally. Future Sound of London and Jarre were some of the stuff being played. Around 99' when I started getting really interested in music, I wanted to explore trance and stuff like that. I remember downloading various livesets from Kazaa with my friend. Good times!

Pingers + Dancing at highschool parties. I'd listened to a little of it prior to that, but never really appreciated EDM as a whole until I started actually dancing to it. Started out by downloading tracks I'd heard while out (I had Sandstorm stuck in my head for 2 - 3 months before I figured out what it was called and DLed it, so it was my search for that and similar music, Cosmic Gate etc, that lead me onto further trance and edm in general). Also well deserved thanks to DI.FM and streamripper.
My brother got me hooked when he gave me: Chicane - Live From Palladium
I would play starcraft and counterstrike listening to that set, and eventually just branched from there.

I got bored of rap music back in 2000 and borrowed a Seb Fontaine cd from a good friend. It took me a while to really understand the music and what was so good about music without lyrics. As it turns out though, I was mostly listening to rap music for the productions and not the lyrics. So many of my old rap and hip hop cd's have awesome melodic productions. I only really keyed in on the melodies of each track and never really the words. This is why I like trance and progressive so much.
i have my brother to thank for it really - as a youth i listened to the likes of sash and alice deejay - i knew then i liked the dance sound - i used to listen to a track in the car chicane 'offshore' it used to give me butterflies everytime i heard it - then i listened to an oakenfold cream resident cd and heard y traxx 'mysteryland' i remember thinking it was the most beautiful thing id ever heard then i heard BT- 'flaming june' after that i got into armin - tiesto - van dyk - pretty quickly - then i listened to bedrock - mixed by jimmy van m- i found i also loved prog - JAMES HOLDEN - digweed - sasha etc. I now favour the swedish house mafia with there element of prog melodies/beats and trance - esque synths.
