No, not really. In truth, this was what DJs did and were supposed to do--play good and interesting music and not worry about styles or genres. I concur, Oakenfold's goa mix is fascinating, and probably the best mix he's ever done--it harkens back to the time when he once did balls-out things like turn out all the lights in his Heaven nightclub and play Tsaikovsky's 1812 Overture in its entirety (its 15 minutes long). Oakenfold has always had a penchance for the theatrics.

The showmanship for the theatrics outshone the actual theatrics themselves about halfway through the decade however, such that by the time Tranceport rolled around, his mixes were no longer brimming with innovative qualities and his image had ballooned out of control. By 1998, he had morphed into some doofus on stage with his headphones pulled over his eyes playing maladroit trance.

His last semi-interesting mix was his Global Underground in New York. But even at that point you can tell he didn't care anymore. After that he was no more than a trancecracker DJ. Not coincidentally, that was about the point that most of you decided you liked trance music.

QFT.

The Goa Mix is good, but not groundbreaking. DJ's do this all the time, even myself (if you can even call me a DJ, mixing is just a hobby for me). Maybe you're just used to the usual trance-bash, but my reality is playing 5 or more genres in the same set. Jungle, acid, dubstep, grime, industrial, electro, detroit tech, you name it.

It may not be ground breaking, but not many people can play 5 different genres in a set and make is sound the least bit coherent.

If you can do so, I think some of us would be very interested in hearing a set

The mark of a good DJ.

If you only play one style of music in your set, you aren't doing a very good job of DJing.

Before the standard was lowered to the status of wedding and mobile DJ level of competence, this is essentially what every rave and club DJ did, and before the onset of digital decks, mind you.

A DJ limiting themselves to one genre of music is like a fat person limiting themselves to one type of food. When there's so much great stuff out there, why ignore 99% of it when it's your job not to?

Well, I don't know if you'd find it "coherent", but I did a set with this tracklist once:

burial - u hurt me
bluetrain - red eye dubs vol. 1 (a1)
pinch - qawwali
shackleton - majestic visions
jung collective - street preacher (plaid remix)
claro intelecto - peace of mind
sunday brunch - my world (night drive mix)
jaydee - plastic dreams (pascal f.e.o.s. remix part 1)
black riot - a day in the life (bonus dub)
blakkat - blakkat (medic mix)
gary martin - samedi
k-alexi - sweet love
the plan - 8 miles wide
aaron carl - tears
blakdoktor - space explorer
surgeon - atol
sintox - within yourself
the mover - nightflight (nonstop 2 kaos)
elektrosmog - enter the dragon (remix)
clemens neufeld - aaatem
mike dearborn - deviant behaviour (mental mix)
purple plejade - blanche

I could upload it if you want. The mixing (done with a computer application) is pretty average though I must say. It's dubstep, dub, electro, house, detroit tech, techno and some acidy stuff towards the end.

Well.. where I live.. thats what all DJs are doing.. they are playing rock, pop, and R`n`B.. they suck, and i hate them..

You've got the causalities confused here. They suck because they play horrible music, not because their sets include a lot of genres.

Kay Cee blatantly ripped it off.

Pete Namlook is credited on the release, so there's no ripping off to speak of really.

Llistened to hour two of the mix on my way back from Miami after the WMC 2007!!! Still a fuckin classic mint example of Oakey at his finest.

Big bump lol.

I think the only way to find this mix is to either torrent/p2p or ebay the 2cd one.

I think lots of dj's around that time did stuff like Oakie did. Check out Kid Paul & Paul van Dyk's Clubnight from 1993 (if you can find it).

I think the mark of a good DJ is when he gets over 'genre' and no matter what he is playing, it's just the right piece(s) of music at the right time. imo the brilliance of deejaying comes from when you can take a style and transform it by recontexting it in a set with a more dominant style. i always think that's beautiful. i don't know might be a parlor trick by this point (how long have djs been doing this after all) but it still gets me.

i'm sure you know that though judging from your taste, but i just want to make the point that it's equally obnoxious to cram as many different styles as one can into a set just for the sake of being 'eclectic' or 'elusive'.

i would never call the goa mix groundbreaking, but it's quite well done IMO and quite emotional for me, but that's probably obvious; i don't think i'm in the minority here

It might be of interest to check out my review of the Digital Alchemy compilation, from which Oakenfold harvested four songs for the Goa mix:

http://www.ektoplazm.com/reviews/digital-alchemy/

There are also some links to more info about Paul, the mix, the liner notes (which Paul wrote), and other related subjects...
