I am a cynic as far as discussing religion goes. It never gets anyone anywehere.

| As far as religion goes, people from the different types are all very avid that there way is the right way, and with so many variations of what happens when you die for example, I don't agree that what everyone religion claims can be possible. |

Thats your choice. For ppl who feel they dont need religion in their lives, i def respect that as well, as I do any opinion about anything ![]() Wanna try to clear up the church from God thingy. The overall grand scheme of religions are corrupted, as pretty much everyone assumes. But, that doesnt mean GOD corrupted them, or intended them to be that way. Cause He def didnt. Thats just the greed of men manifested. So please dont blame God when you lash out on religions being corporations of manipulation...cause again, thats MAN ![]() Anger and resentment towards religious institutions is justified, no doubt, but not towards God imo |

I prefer the idea that some form of afterlife exists, as the idea is comforting to me. That, I think was the original purpose of religion, to be a comfort in life and to reassure people that death isn't finite.
Over thousands of years some people have manipulated the desperation of the masses, for their own gains i.e. money and power, and so religion was born.
On the whole I am content in believing that the only afterlife I will be a part of is the cycle of life when my body decays.
The idea of a supreme being aka God doesn't sit well for me though. That would mean that my life was already laid out before I was born, that every action I make is either good or bad, right or wrong, that I am being judged constantly, therefore God offers me no comfort.
I would normally always say that I'm agnostic, but after reading what I just wrote I will vote myself an athiest.

I see your point, but the judgments of parents, peers, and authorities don't ultimately lead to a decision on how we spend our afterlives. They are humans like me and in that count we are all equal.
I thought we were talking about God here, and my point still stands that I find no comfort from a supreme being who judges me on every action I ever make.
so contrary to many posts here
pvd, tiesto, avb, and that Oakenfold guy aren't god?!
And here I thought Ready, Steady, Go was a hymn.
seriously,
show me the proof, I'll start believing more. simple.
I believe in God.

agnostic/borderline atheist?
i don't know. lately i just hate applying myself to predetermined labels. why do i have to apply myself to one of a few existing sets of beliefs, or align myself on the dichotomy of god existing or not? these are all things that i only care about because so many other people do. i think i'm smart enough to develop my own moral compass. i'll have to see some kind of sign myself to believe in anything supernatural, tradition and other people attesting their faith will not cut it for me.
the marxist belief that man created god blah blah seems pretty cynical at first, but it makes a lot of sense if you actually read his works. it's just the way we reason - if you're hungry, you will think of a solution; a way to get food. if you want to be rich, many avenues exist to getting there. however, there are some universal goals that can't be answered, such as wondering where the fuck you go when you die. nothing we can reason or prove can explain these things, so supernatural concepts have to fill in so we can get sleep at night. and as we can see religion also helps answer other injustices like not being able to achieve those goals of food or money. this is how the concept of god came forth universally in every society in my opinion, it wasn't because god stretched his powers across the globe and showed proof of his existence in different ways or something.
however, asking whether religion can function as a set of values or a tool to bring a community together is a completely different topic. while i think that it can be good, looking at all the problems with organized religion (especially the catholic church in the last 1000 years, even without the da vinci code BS it's pretty ridiculous), and all the religious wars going on, i have to say we'd probably be better off leaving this monotheistic stuff behind us.
This debate is tired.
*yawn*
Hmm.. I'm somewhere in between agnostic and atheist. I don't believe in God in the usual way - Bible, Quaran, and everything else related is bullshit - God doesn't talk to people, nor did it ever have a part-man part-God likeness walking the earth, it doesn't do miracles because you pray for them, it doesn't even care if you pray to it, and it most certainly doesn't judge you. All that crap was just made up by people with big imaginations to make the simple people back then to adhere to a common set of basic moral rules. Maybe so that people would agree on stuff they don't necessarily understand and not fight over it. Of course, it'd be great if it was just ONE set of beliefs and moral rules, but people had to make their own religions with their own stories and lessons, which created differences, which created rifts, which created wars, and there went the basic idea of making the set of beliefs to keep people happy and at peace.
Don't even get me started on organized religion - put in a nice way, organized religion is a disease upon humanity. It hinders free thought and free speech, it uses the many for personal gains of the few, it manipulates people, and it is the biggest cause of pain, suffering, and loss of human lives that we will ever know.
What I do believe is that God is more like a governing force of the universe rather than some supernatural being as He is described in your bible. What I said in the other thread kind of describes it:
| quote: |
My belief is this - I think some things/situations/events do happen for a reason - all those things we brush off as merely an unlikely coincidence really aren't, and that there is a force that governs these situations/"coincidences". That said, I believe humans do have complete free will. Whatever force that governs a car crashing, and flipping over, sliding across the intersection to stop an inch in front of you has no control over how you react to what happened. I dunno if i'm making myself clear, but basically, this force has no control over us, it only has control over our environment. So we do make our own path, but this path is determined partly by the events that happen to us, and partly by how we react to the events that happen to us (and how we react is totally up to us). |

there was a thread like this before .... i explained my views on how religion was invented by man there for God was invented by man etc don't feel liek getting into it again
I believe in a numerator and denominator united as one.
The Athiest Test
Here is a poor argument by anology, which attempts to strike some faith into the heart of your avarage athiest by making him seem like a fool. I had to do this for my morals and reasoning class and I thought it was very humarous.
