-- Using Traktor 3 with an External mixer
Pages (2): « 1 [2]
Bump
I have an Audigy 2 on my Dell desktop PC but have not used it for a long time for Traktor (using Toshiba laptop now for Traktor). My Audigy card is probably very similar to yours but I know they have updated the design (mine is 4 years old). The Creative speaker settings utility does not work for me right now due to some problem.
Anyway, as I recall, what you would do is use the Creative utility (probably accessed from the Creative mixer) to set the card into quadraphonic (4 channel) mode. This gives you two stereo outputs, on two 1/8" jacks on your Audigy. You would feed the "front" (Line Out 1, green) speaker jack to one stereo channel on your mixer, and the "rear" (Line Out 2, black) jack to the other stereo mixer channel.
Set Traktor to use an external mixer. Play around with the audio assignments in Traktor to get the correct audio on the 2 outputs.
Similar setup if you want to use the Traktor internal mixer. In this case Line 1 is for your speakers or amplifier, line 2 is for your headphones, and set Traktor to use the internal mixer (or not to use an external mixer).
To record a mix, in Traktor 2.x hit the "Record" button and then do your mix. Then hit the "save" button and it puts your mix in a .nmx file so you can play it bak later. Then you use the "Write" button to generate a WAV file (or set of WAV files if you want it to crudely cut your mix into tracks). Then you use a program of your choice to make MP3(s) from the WAV mix. It would be similar in Traktor 3.x, however I understand they might have some bugs in 3.x related to recording a mix.
Good luck M8 (and be careful of them Chavs oooh they are spreading all over the world it could be very bad http://chavscum.co.uk )
just won a Vestax VMC-004 on ebay
once i get it i'll hook it up into traktor via my philips aurilium and start rocking it out
yay cant wait
keying all my songs now haha
Ive read a lot of info on here on MIDI controllers etc but whats the main difference between using a MIDI controller over a regular club standard dj mixer with a program like Traktor 3? I know that you can get controllers with jog wheels etc and can assign traktor functions to the controller but are those the only real advantages of using them? If im not too bothered about a jog wheel or pitch control because i can do all of that on my laptop with traktor should i just stick to using regular mixers??
well i just started using traktor with my vestax vmc-004 (very easy to set up btw) and im perfectly content with everything the advantage of a good external mixer is you get nice quality faders and knobs that you have the good feel off.. the thing is though, traktor is temporary for me until i can afford CDJs that was the original goal so i didnt really consider MIDI anymore once i realized i wanted CDJs
Here it is, directly from the horses mouth..

As previously mentioned ive now got the Creative Audigy soundacrd and will be buying the cables necessary to hook up my laptop to an external mixer. For anyone that currently uses this setup could you outline what i plug each end into etc. The soundcard itself has three outputs, one green, one orange and one black. So if im using a two channel setup does it matter which deck (A or B) goes into which coloured output?
Secondly what do i have to set up for the preferences in traktor regarding using an external mixer. Ive managed to hook everything up using the internal mixer and my speakers but have no idea where to start when using an external mixer with a proper club soundsystem.
"FRONT" Goes to Channel1
"REAR" Goes to Channel2
In Traktor:
Preferences -> Mixer Setup -> Change it to External Mixer on top and for channel one you put Creative Audigy 1 (Mono)/Creative Audigy 2
Channel 2 should be Audigy3/4
if not 3/4 then 5/6..
Thanks Stan, Will give it a try!
no problem
I set it up with ableton also in a similar way except my 3/4 became 5/6 under asio4all but itsall good
Ok just been trying to setup my mixer with Tracktor.
I don't know if my soundcard is a mulit-output, so maybe someone can help me.
When i look in the back of my PC.. i see a green, yellow, black....all of those are outputs..
Now when I go to my preferences in tractor, I only get options of 1 and 2 to assign...I don't have 3 and 4 as a previous poster suggested..
So is my card not a mulit-output then?

Well I called dell...and asked about the connections on my PC.
The guy said that the green is the standard plug (which i knew)....but for surround i need to use the green, black and the yellow one.
So i guess it can support mulitple channels.
Soo, how come then in Tractor i cant assign more than just 1 and 2 which are the left and right for Deck A...
I don't have 3 and 4 which I could use for Deck B.
Traktor supports stereo splitting: deck A playing on L and deck B playing on R. Only one line out is needed with this method. You will then need:
and two of these:
Connect both blacks to channel 1 and both reds to channel 2.
The only thing that you're going to lose this way is a rare swoosh effect (sound moving from one side to another). Most club setups are mono anyway.
You might need to use a soundcard utility program that came with your Dell to set the sound to a mode like quadraphonic or some type of surround sound mode. On my Audigy on a desktop Dell I usually set it to quadraphonic mode so it is outputting to 2 stereo connectors (front, and rear aka surround). Do this when Traktor is not running, then start up Traktor, otherwise it might get confused and not recognize all the soundcard outputs
Takes a bit of diddling with different computers/soundcards before most people figure it out.
I also use a notebook computer with Echo Indigo DJ card and this is a lot easier to set up as the card is designed for DJing and only runs in one mode. However the setup even on this system can get messed up and it takes time to get it working again (Windows XP device drivers + ASIO + WDM + soundcard software + Traktor = too many settings possibilities = total confusion).

I use Ableton, but it needs pretty much the same type of outputs as Traktor
Anyhow, I use an old m-audio quattro which is a USB D->A Audio Box. They are like $250 if you buy them new but you can find them on EB for 1/5th that cause. They aren't made anymore as the recent m-audio boxes are firewire (which uses less CPU cycles, but today's laptops can handle the USB w/o issue and mixer that support laptop connections are using USB because it's a more stable platform overall!)
USB from laptop to the Quattro. Then two stereo 1/4" male (phono) to RCA connectors to go from the box to the mixer.
