I don't understand...what are they supposed to do when there's no fire - besides be on call in case there is a fire?

I'd rather them playing cards at the station when I call them to tell them my house is burning down, then having to wait for them to drive to the station from their homes, and then get in the fire truck and drive to my house.

+1 on that one. I think they deserve a break once in awhile. They're job is a lot more dangerous than probably anyone's on this board.

Now THAT I will agree to. I often pull all nighters at school, and the security guards basically walk around waking people up who have fallen asleep, and they act like FBI agents all hardcore about it, hehe.
