Not really. People didnt really start caring and taking notice untill 9/11/01, and the whole Iraq debacle.

you mean the average american didn't care until 9/11.

middle east is fucked, and I agree with orbax that we should nuke the whole shit hole.

And i dont think the actions of 10 people killing says anything about Iran,

but the fact that Irans supreme court acquitted them because they were killing people involved in "Un-islamic" acts speaks volumes.

Even with those british naval folk that got captured....the iranians wanted to have them executed, and protested.

THEY DONT EVEN KNOW WTF FOR. they're just angry arab idiots.

And lets not forget about the mohammad cartoons.

While it's impossible to say European society was text book similar in times past there were a lot of similarities in family units and the whole honor idea all throughout the land.

Non religious/heretics/witches being burnt alive at the stake was common practice in Europe before.

A daughter getting pregnant outside the banner of marriage was banned from her family and doomed to a life of insults.

Don't treat the Arab world as savages when not so long ago the "modern" world was doing the same exact things.
It's just hypocritical and isn't advancing the situation in a better direction because imposed change results in resentment, rebellion towards the outside world and also a reinforcement in conservative ideology.

The irony of your position is pretty hilarious. You're angry at Iran's judicial system, yet you want to nuke the entire region.

That doesnt sound like justice to me.

Well, I'm sure the "financial compensation to their victims' families" will mitigate the atrocities committed.

Ann Coulter would say "THEY SHOULDNT GET A FUCKIN DIME"

The middle east is an excellent reason as to why there should be a very definite division of church and state within every country.

Letting people's interpretations on religion decide the lives of innocent people is reason enough to hate any country. It just so happens that many middle eastern countries appear to be focused on this form of 'justice'. :/

The only difference is now there are countries that you can learn from.

Iran should say "holy smokes...other countries are letting women vote, and have unbiased courts (unless you're black). maybe we should wake up and be less ignorant and ideological"

You obviously have no understanding of how democratic change takes place

If you want to go into detail as to why things aren't moving forward you are failing to see that things are actually going backwards.

The middle east had a lot of countries which were going through great changes for the better in the last 10-20+ years but because of outside rejection, nationalists took over and the countries radicalized themselves effectively going back to the good old ways.

It's too easy to expect things to change and remain stable overnight.

Modernity has it's good and bad sides.
Media amplifies a lot of negative imagery of what your enemies are doing which only pushes people to reinforce themselves in their ideologies and avoid any form of concrete personal change and dialogue with the outside world.

Yay for living in EME ( European Middle East )

America has lots of muslims..

I'm telling you guys, the middle east is going through their middle ages, or "moyen ages".

If you look at western europe during that period in history, there was a very similar problem/crisis in regards to the "church" or religion in general slowly beginning to lose it's grip on the people and the people gradually becoming more moderate, while the people in charge clenched desperately to the old ways and enforced them brutally on anyone who was bold enough to speak out or disobey.

If your actual opinion is that nuking 'middle east shit hole' is a good idea, then you are mentally retarded.

this is a pretty much spot on analysis. By being from the 'free west' we have to give these people the chance to reach the levels we perceive ourselves to be at and the only way to do so is to stop giving them a reason to hate us and start involving them as if they were just a normal country/region. The problem is that the words muslim or islam immediately bring a nature of hate, especially in this country. Because of the actions of a few who cause problems from islamic communities, nobody wants to live near them, then they moan when "they" all live together. If we put the money going into mr bush' war into things that might help educate people plus improve our awful infrastructure maybe we could be worth something,. but it'll never happen

I think it's funny that the Middle East is hating the West for forcing "Western influence" on them when they are using and loving our CARS, COMPUTERS and PLANES and other electronic devices invented from the West. Lemme tell ya if someone gave me all those things in my shitty little country I would love them, even if they were Jews.

Ever thought that maybe that western influence is about something OTHER than just consumer goods/technological advancements?

Yes, but if they don't like the political climate that the West is imposing on them, then why don't they say that instead of generalizating that anything from the West is evil and unislamic? I mean seriously, if I really hated Apple for their computers because their philosophy and computers were trying to change my lifestyle, it'd be pretty silly of me to go to the gym with an ipod everyday.
