-- Ottawa puts high price tag on its pot

5 dollars a gram seems alright.
it's better then some other pills being sold.
and there is research being done. i know that for a fact. there is research being done on different administration of the THC so you don't have to smoke a joint for it. there are already different therapies in clinical trials being used on people with various pain disorders.

It is nothing even close to warranting a markup of 20%, let alone 1500%. Nor is the research required to improve growing conditions, research, all that garbage that you mentioned costly enough to warrant a mark-up so high. The fact that you fail to see this is down right disturbing. |

Clinical trials and developing new therapies is not a cheap thing to do (gov't involvement or not). |

| Originally posted by Orko Actually these patients are smoking a lot, grams a day, not fractions of a gram. |

The point of the article is the mark up. If part of that markup was in fact going into R&D, that would be great, but it is not.
Ottawa pays $328.75 per kilo.
Users are paying $5000 per kilo.
None of that $4671.25 is going to R&D. Only a portion of the original $328.75 is going to R&D. We understand that administration costs are high, but who exactly is paying them?
I am not well versed in the pharmaceutical sector, but here is how i see it.
Phizer develops a drug, and sells it through Shoppers Dug Mart. Does Shoppers have to pay any of the development costs? No. Phizer has to develop it, make sure it passes all of Health Canada's procedures, and has to market it. Shoppers simply sells the drug. The Canadian Government is Shoppers, and Prairie Plant Systems is Phizer. The government is a reseller here, not a producer.
Again Canada's monopolistic practices are hurting the consumer. If any company with competition needed $4600 to move a kilo of product, they would be out of business very quickly.

| Originally posted by slingshot I would be willing to bet a significant amount of money that your average medicinal marijauna smoker is smoking anywhere from 1-3 grams a day. Injesting .25 of a gram or even smoking .25 of a gram is such a ludacrisly small amount of marijuana...especially for someone who uses on a regular basis. I would also think that medicinal marijauna users are getting just as blitzed, just as regularly as your token teenage pothead. |

| Originally posted by StereoPrincess personally, since i am not a pot smoker, 1 gram a day would pretty much make me comatose. remember, they aren't passing the doobie around either. ah well, you guys have your opinion. the mark up has to be comparable to street prices because every harry, dick and jane would be getting a perscription and reselling it to their friends. with 30 grams @ 5 dollars each, you can already make a profit. sell 15 of your grams at 10 dollars and you got your money back fully. that is already a risk for the government. |
