I can see this if you don't like hip hop, everyone has their preferences.

I've found that if you have a real interest in music, the stuff you play (and in my case invest in) will be any type of music that gets you nodding your head. Drum loop records, horn samples, hip hop, house, dnb, soul, funk.

Thats not to say that if you only spin house your not a 'music connoisseur', its just the observation I've made of people who own tons of records and really love a good beat.

I love DJing EDM but I also like DJing rap/hip-hop. Being able to adapt to the crowd regardless of how shallow they may be and give the ma good time is what DJing is about. If you can always play for a group without changing from the style you like then good for you.

But back to what you said, enjoyment of all types of music makes you a more well-rounded person, not just enjoyment of less popular styles.

Sometimes I think the EDM community bashes mainstream for being shallow too much when doing that makes them shallow; however, I compeltely see where people are coming from as I get tired of "Sandstorm" and numerous Cascada songs on the top Dance iTunes list.

Summary... If I can make the crowd dance and go crazy, I don't care what I'm playing.

when i play house or electro or even trance or electronica or techno i really get into the music, i just cant get into hip hop like i get into electronic music.

my only experience with hip-hop people, luckily, were REAL hip-hop people. i'm talking MCs, breakdancers and a few hardcore fans. i was supposed to spin 1 hour, then this KICKASS turntablist (great guy two), and we'd alternate. the turntablist never made it, and while the hip hop crowd asked me what was up with him not being there, they were actually breakdancing and complimented my selection. some even said it wasn't their thing, but they kinda dug it.

my top40 experiences? all sucked ass. that is all.

also, i would play trip/hip hop actually. i really like it. only i don't really know any of the names of producers i like, and it's shit that i never hear on the radio, parties, anywhere. every now and then, that turntablist guy chucks me a mix-CD or two. guys like DJ Z-Trip are the fucking shizzle mah neeg, ya hear? breaks, hip hop, DnB, crazy turntablism, and even some tech-house/tehcno sometimes.
