So I got a few pm's about this...

This is the way I do it: (I use Cubase)

Backing up your patches to the JP-8000/8080

1) Open a blank project, and set the tempo to say 60bpm.

(60bpm is good for me, and you should try and be consistent with the upload/download tempo you use with all your gear / ie: make it a habit.)

2) Create a midi track, pointing at your JP-8000/8080

3) Under the menu -> "File" -> "Preferences"; ensure that in the section "Midi" -> "Midi Filter"; in the record section that "Sysex" is not ticked.

(Otherwise Cubase will not record incoming Sysex (ie Patch/Bank dump data)

4) On the JP-8080, Press the "edit" button, then "Init/Util" (#7) Four (4) times to bring up "Bulk Dump" and select what you want to dump.

(One patch, all patches in Bank A, all patches in Bank B, the entire dump (ie: All) etc)

5) Start recording in Cubase

6) Press the "Write" button to start sending the Sysex/Patch data to Cubase, Your JP should now display "Transmitting" (Do not touch the JP! Do not do anything at all actually, till it says "Completed" and returns to the menu screen.

7) Stop recording in Cubase.

8) Use menu: "File -> Export -> Midi File" and save the midi file on your computer.

Done.

Restoring your patches to the JP-8000/8080

1) Open a blank project, and set the tempo to say 60bpm.

2) Create a midi track, pointing at your JP-8000/8080

3) Import the midi file with the patches you want to restore.

4) This stage probably only needs to be done once, but you need too ensure that your JP is configured to allow Sysex data to be received.

Press "Edit" then "Midi" (#5) Four (4) times to bring up "RX Exclusive SW". This needs to be set to "On" to be able to restore patches/banks etc. Set to "On" and press the "Write" button.

5) Press play in Cubase, the JP will restore whatever patches / bank / data where in the source file.

6) When finished, stop Cubase, and your done.

Obviously, whatever patches / bank / data that you stored in the midi file is what is going to be restored.

Note:

Details can be found on pp137 of the JP-8080 manual (May be slightly different for the JP-8000; see section "Saving Settings on an External Sequencer (Bulk Dump)"

Very, very cool! Thanks rusty. The beauty of this method is that it'll work with just about any synth. Thanks for the help, now that I read the steps, this makes perfect sense!

The methodology is basically exactly the same for all synths.

The only slight difference is in setting the "Sysex receive option" and initiating the Sysex dump from the synth.

If you can do it on a JP, then you can do it on a Virus, Nord, Waldorf etc etc

Yeah, I had the Sysex filter turned off anyway since there were certain situations where I was using CC Mode 1 on the JP to automate parameter changes. For the life of me, I can't figure out why Roland decided to make Amp Sustain a Sysex message in Mode 1 when A, D & R are CC numbers, but I've seen weirder things on MIDI CC Implementations. Switching to CC Mode 2 sorted that issue.

Anyway, thanks for the help, it is much appreciated.
