Personally, I prefer to memorise jukugoes and make random associations (such as 捨 and 拾 reminding me of electronic charges because of the (+) and (-) in them). However, I find it interesting when people say they have problems in Japanese (as Floorfiller mentioned he had) because I'm studying in order to be a Japanese teacher, and I should be able to help them out

Use them in English, so you can get used to them. For example... you can write the roots of English words using kanji:

私・好ke・女子s・着'ing・sweaters
(I like girls wearing sweaters)

Sure, it looks clumsy in the beginning, but that's a way of memorising all those kanjis even in English Works for me (in Portuguese)

How does the "like" work? I understand adding 's' for plurality and adding 'ing' to make it a participle, but I don't understand adding 'ke'.

(I BARELY started scratching the surface of Japanese and I was only learning Hiragana... hadn't even started with Kanji.)

I thought it would be weird to have the 好 hanging around all by itself, so I added the "ke" so it could contrast with "好ked" and "好kes"... but it all comes down to personal preference, really - this is all fun and games, after all

lira, i do that sometimes...it does help.


my main problem is SPEAKING/HEARINGjapanese...i need to upgrade my confidence because i second guess myself sometimes when i speak it. hearing it... it's worse for me to understand soeone if they're speaking it too fast. i LOVE writing it though... i write in japanese a lot.

how do you guys practice your speaking? i am studying it outside of classes so i have no other japanese students to talk japanese to.

maybe you could find a japanese group to talk with. a lot of times like book clubs...there are groups for that kinda stuff outside of the classroom environment...

Go to Japan. I spent a month in Japan while I was learning it (2nd year) and my skills improved 10 fold.

floorfiller, they do have some japanese class study groups but i think you have to be enrolled in the class. i will be on the look out for others.

bas, yes i definitely intend to go to japan sometime. hopefully within the next two years.

sometimes i wish there was a japanese community which had everything labeled in japanese sso i can increase my kanji/object association. anyhow, it's good to know there are other japanese leaners/speakers on here too! i thought yan was the only other one until i read this thread



do any of you think chinese might be an easier language? i hear they don't have verb agreements or something of the sort? tome it seems easier because it's not hiragana, katakana AND kanji you have to learn but just the characters. i was thinking of maybe learning chinese for business reasons later on (most likely after i attempt to learn korean).

and for you japanese learners, did you guys also use the genki books and the "an integrated approach to intermediate japanese" book?

I took a a 10 month course on Japanese in grade 11, didn't learn squat. I think I may be language retarded.
