Can someone explain this to me?
I think it's unfair to post a bunch of numbers and not explain it, not everyone is a techno-geek.

they've both been cracked for the past month.
It's just become an internet fad (as of a couple of nights ago) to post it all over the internet
this key has proven to be a "universal" key, whereas it started that you had to examine the playback of each protected movie to extract its signature key. less work extracting the key = more productivity

Wouldn't HD-DVD actually fare worse from it? I mean, the companies releasing movies would surely rather go with a format that is secure, and thus release on Blu-Ray?

I think they'd go with whatever is in people's homes, knowing full well the average user is still probably going to pay for movies.

like sony. PS3's are more expensive in europe than anywhere else, however they've removed features to cut costs such as some backward capabilities. I guess that's fair ?

Dunno. But i find a techno-geek that spends days upon days trying to break codes to rip off companies could spend that same time finding a jobby job that pays him enough to buy the friggen things. Kinda sad.

Wait, so you are upset because big corporation make billions of dollars off consumers? Maybe if you got a JOB that payed enough you coud buy what your heart desires.
Why should Tom Cruise (or any actor/artist/athelete) take a pay cut? They earned what they made - they draw the crowds which draw the dollars...do you have any concept of economics?
Posted by gehzumteufel on May-02-2007 23:52:
some obvious misinformation here.
HD-DVD and Blu-Ray use the same DRM scheme known as AACS. the processing key works on both formats.
on a side note....anyone notice the link i provided above with 20k+ diggs is gone? i thought they stopped deleting the articles? wtf

your a moron. the reason for this rebellion has NOTHING to do with economics. it has to do with customer choice and the BETAMAX decision. this also has a lot more impact than you realize.
ever hear of people copying vhs as a backup cause vhs do wear out? hmm..i think you have. well corporations (well more like the MPAA and RIAA) have lobbied to make this illegal! you cant LEGALLY copy a dvd for even backup purposes. also DRM restricts what sort of players you can put your music or video on. AND this also makes hardware manufacturers liable for creating a device that circumvents copyright protections. you may think that these copyright protections are good but you as an uninformed consumer have no idea. its the music and movie industries way of calling EVERYONE a criminal even if they arent. do you like that? you really need to do some research before you start calling people cheap or not willing to pay for content.
great example...how much does it actually cost to produce a cd. ALL costs included? $.05USD. yes thats right FIVE CENTS!!! how much of those cd sales go to the artist? approximately the same. you do the math.

Yes i have because "tape" wears out as oppose to DVDs which, if kept in their cases and not scratched DO NOT. And if you really NEED a backup buy 2...they are friggen cheap.

nope. It's that they put these piece of shit protections all over their products, wether it be music downloads, video media, pdf books, etc. If i want to copy my shit, then i want to copy my shit. If the person so chooses to use the key for his own profits(copy+resell), (as with anything in this world) they are responsible for any consequences they run into.
If i don't want to deal with the fact that my mp3 player doesn't support .mp4(p), then i better find a way to extract the key from my iTunes downloads, copy them to unrestricted mp3 and have my music with me like any other person can. i'm sorry if i can't afford an Ipod right now, can you sell your Bentleyz Spinnaz to help get everyone in the world a cheap media player that can support .mp4p or .aacp?
If my friend wants to copy his entire library of DVDs to his networked media drive, so that he can watch his movies over the internet from anywhere in the world, then i'm sorry, he's going to have to bust a key for that.
Yeah, there's piracy in the world and the key is certainly going to be used for it. But making the normal consumer bust his nuts to use his media for pratical matters is ridiculous. All these companies are desperate to save their zillion dollar profits by incorporating piece of shit protections on their prodcuts.
I believe certain Sony BD media requires a TV or a tuner that has HDCP. So you can buy your Dancing With the Stars BlueRay disc boxset for $120, buy your beautiul "42 Samsung LCD, buy a beautiful Samsung BD player, and then realize you need BUY an HDCP connector, which whole purpose is to stop piracy. A fully legitimate consumer, stopped dead in his tracks, because he needs to buy something to wage a war on somehting he is not a part of.
Then there is the Starforce fiasco, which permanently fucked up people disc drives.
the Anti-DRM movement has been going on since inception, and not just because it annoys the piracy groups. because it pisses the shit out of regular consumers.
I don't have an answer to stopping piracy. It's been around since, i dunno, forever. and it'll probably be around for, i dunno, forever. But this whole DRM+CSS shit is ridiculous and sometimes, it pisses people the fuck off.
/Why should Tom Cruise (or any actor/artist/athelete) take a pay cut? They earned what they made - they draw the crowds which draw the dollars...do you have any concept of economics?
Yeah, Tom Cruise is great. I somewhat enjoy his movies and everyone deserves what they get. But when you give someone $50m, he does a piss poor job, the movie ends like shit, then the studio complains "hmmm, we didn't earn ENOUGH profits, we must make it our initiative to fuck the consumer in the ass," then give the actor $70m for his next movie, and then THAT movie is a piece of shit with even less profits, well, then some things come into mind. Budgeting and quality. Shit, i'd still see War of the Worlds 2 if it came out in theaters, but I wouldn't have the least bit of sympathy if it was pirated in a 0-day
Is everyone who breaks DRM a thief to you?

Wow. I'm tempted to write a long response to this but I'm feeling a bit lazy now. Gehz and SuspicionVandit seem to be doing a fine enough job.
