Has there been any research done on addictive personalities vs. non-addictive... I feel like you and I are two extremes on this stuff!

hmmm...not sure whether i have an addictive personality, though i think i am sometimes weak willed. usually on vacation i tend to chain smoke (but mostly because i'm drinking non-stop) and quit once i'm back. i think if my attention is diverted i can avoid anything. however, if i get bored or looking for ways to avoid work/stress or to escape.

for example when i posted the thread last spring i was busy studying for the CFA exam and went two weeks without alchohol, cigarettes, and caffiene, just because i was busy with something else.

this reminds me of a conversation i had when i was trying to quit coffee last july. this girl i was kind of seeing came to visit me during work.

her: so how was your day
me: not too great
her: really? why what happened?
me: well, i kinda had a cup of coffee this morning
her: and?
me: it's just been bothering me all day
her: go on
me: it doesn't feel right, i have to do something about this whole coffee thing
her: i should take a video of you and send it to the little children in africa
me: huh?

her: seriously, coffee is the biggest of your worries? you are feeling bad because you were trying to avoid it but still had a cup of coffee? what is wrong with you? i'm sure the starving children would be interested to hear what ruined your whole day.

me: ummm...ummm... yeah. i guess i am pretty fortunate that that's the greatest of my worries. thanks, you really cheered me up.

omg thats insane

excess calories are excess calories, no matter what.

u discipline urself to DRINK one slimfast cuz its less caloric than a meal. then again a liquid diet can never wholly replace real food, which is they never work/provide only a temporary solution.

anyway, good luck on going cold turkey (that IS the only way you can quit for good). otherwise it may end up being this back-and-forth cycle you go on for years and years with no end...green tea is a good habit, i should drink more of it myself.

as for the social aspect of smoking, thats **how** ppl get sucked in initally. of course its "attractive" and thats why ppl like it...do u think teenagers *look* at a cigarette and actively think, "oh i want to end up with charred lungs, esophagus full of phlegm, withdrawal headaches, and end up with pores smelling like a chimney and have yellow knuckles and teeth even when there isn't a cigarette in ur hand?

i spent two years at college fucked up on all kinds of things, barely getting any sleep, staying up and binging for 4 or 5 days on end.. nowadays im pretty clean, haven't smoked anything in a few weeks, havent ate any pills in a few months, havent snorted anything in even longer... strangely when i walk around at night.... the sobriety... its intoxicating in its own... i guess after being so fucked up for so long; i enjoy being sober once again.. im really proud of myself... but i have a problemm... i cant stay sober at clubs... .. and i LOVE dancing the night away... just... i dont ... i get urges..... ahadslfjakl;sjfjiawoejfiopjawpioejfpoij i

until i step foot in a club, my life of sobriety is fine.. but the second i see a lazer... forget it...

i actually quit coffee alltogether a few months ago because i found i was relying on it, and the crashes sucked.. highs are good but downs suck, and if you enjoy the high, there will always be a down, such is the price you have to pay.. to me, its not worth it anymore... plus.. i only have so many braincells left, i dont know if its worth risking them for a night of pleasure

you WOULD know if u have an addictive personality , questioning yourself about it , i highly doubt u do . its pretty simple.

hahah smart girl!!

Drew: um yeah, drinking one of those VENTI starbucks makes me--->

For some reason, for as long as I have drank coffee, my body never adjusted to it (some people build like a tolerence to it and have to drink more as time goes on) I have to have a coffee daily, but a small one will do or else I am just BaNaNaS!!

I have an addictive personality and I am certain of it but coffee really does nothing for me. I prefer tea or iced tea but I do notice when I don't drink any tea I get caffiene withdrawal headaches. I am not addicted to tea tho, I just like it better than water since it has a flavor. I cut down my soda intake because it makes me break out. The cigarette thing is kinda hard tho. Seriously cut it off now before you get too hooked and it becomes a habit. I am still learning to keep mine under control but its harder when I am drinking or partying.

none so far, but i've heard of people putting the patch on their arm and having their arm go numb a bit so i started it on my hip. seems fine so far.

i do get some sensation but i've been chewing gum to replace that. no side affects that i'd say are major.

i got my patches through 311 for free!

it's helping i admit

Yeaaaaaaa, go D&D!!! I'm proud of you

My brother smoked since he was 16ish, just quit 2 years ago at 35 and doesn't miss a minute of it, so everything is possible! Imagine the damage he did in those 20 years though. Think about how every cig you skip is a little damage saved to your body and how thankful you'll be later on that your body is so much cleaner and more healthy than it would have been if you had kept on smoking...

lol D&D, to tell you the truth...lol not sure where i'd rank cigs in terms of 'damaging my body' LOL

true

but the less smoking the better.. esp. when the other type of smoking is the one you're not thinking about giving up

Good news everyone! I haven't had a cigarette in 5 days thanks to your support, warnings, and insults.

The bad news is RB (the guy who sits next to me) went and bought a pack today. A friend stopped by my office today and I went down and had a cigarette with him. He had also supposedly quit smoking.

It was all his fault.

On the bright side I haven't had any coffee in the last 5 days either.
