-- Met a promoter....

while we're on the subject on promoters.
I was in talks with a certain promoter here to play the an opening slot in the house stage for a 6000pax outdoor party sometime in june.
benny benassi will be headlining the night while the dj's before him and after me all play house / tech house.
here's the problem, i play full on psytrance.
i requested that i get a slot in the hard trance stage but unfortunately the local headliners for the hard trance stage are only letting dj's from their collectiv play with them.
so that left me with the breaks tent or the hip hop tent.
The breaks tent is already chock full of amazing talent and the hip hop tent is ..erm.. meh.
bottomline is ..
i turned down the gig and many many people are giving me shit for turning down such a big event.
Should of just played and if ppl ask why did you play in the hip hop tent blame the promoter hehehhe free drinks r free drinks.
i got vvip.
i get free drinks anyways. :P
I wouldnt have played the gig. I would have agreed to blend my music style more to suit the event but wouldnt have played soemthing completly different like hip hop or top 40 stuff.
yeah.
i mean i could've just decided to play house since I used to anyway. I was booked under the impression i still played house but it's just not the sound i want to be pushing anymore.

AND let it go on the first beat of the phrase of the track thats already playing). you can normally tell what part of the phrase the ongoing track is at by listening to a few beats. there should be a crash or a distinct change in sound telling you a new one has started most of the times. |

You can simulate this via volume/eqing but good phrasing is the difference between great djs and everyone else IMO |

It's just that, when I press play on the cued track - I have to re-sync the beats with the platter, which takes a few seconds. After that I have no choice, but to bring the cued track in at some random point. To summarize - I miss the first beat of a phrase. |
don't listen to the guys who say don't do it
go play at this club
if you suck you suck but this opportunity may not be here when you are ready the next time
I agree with the dude who told you to practice beforehand though
Glue yourself to the decks
Good luck bro

| Originally posted by agentdansmith I find all this talk about phrasing really weird cause when I first started djing many years ago, I completely understood the concept of phrasing way before I could beatmatch. But then, some people have an ear for it some people rely on technical methods. |
I am listening to your mix now, sir. Beat matching is fine in your first transition, though you faded the first track out a little fast there at the end. I'll post more when I finish it up. But I haven't heard any "shoes in the dryer" train wrecks or anything. Maybe you're stressing over nothing?
Well, I gave this a run through at work this morning. This not a terrible mix by any means. It does need work, however. I think you are at that point where you are VERY close to being comfortable enough and skilled enough in your beat matching to do longer blends. I'd say that with daily practice you could post the same mix in 2 months and it would sound like an entirely different mix!
Some of your fades are a little quicker than I prefer. You have the incoming track matched relatively well, but the outgoing track fades too quickly, so you lose energy while waiting for the melody on the incoming track to arrive. This, as you know, is your phrasing. I don't know any magic advice to confer here. When I mix, I usually wait for the first beat coming out of the second or "mini" breakdown to throw in my incoming track on its very first beat. This works the majority of the time, but again, it's not guaranteed to deliver every time. I mix uplifting trance, so it's an easy, standard formula to mix this way.
You're getting there, so don't give up in frustration. In closing, if you haven't done so, become intimately familiar with your tracks. This will go a long way in proper phrasing.
I' hope you'll post another mix in the coming weeks so I can listen again.

| Originally posted by Andryuha well, you see, I understand the concept of phrasing. It's just that I can't really put it to work. |

Originally posted by Smiley even if after you've dropped the new record on the first beat of the phrase and you need to bend the pitch to get it in time, the phrases are still fine (unless you pitch bend a whole bar the wrong way, which is unlikely). i found phrasing the easy part, beatmatching though..hmmm a bit harder ![]() you shouldnt need to count beats, you should just *know* when to do it, i cant really explain but im sure someone can ![]() edit - how long are your transitions usually? judging by other DJs ive seen i'm doing it all wrong ![]() have you got a mix uploaded BTW? im no expert but would like to listen |
I made another mix last night and I think I'll send this one to the promoter. Let me know what you guys think (it's mostly choons, due to promoter's request):

I listened to the mix and the beat matching seemed pretty spot on. I heard a small drift, but you handled it well.

So, I sent a demo to this promoter about 10 days ago and I haven't heard back from him. Should I keep waiting or should I contact him and see how things are going?
