Well that's all you can do really, when you have a cold. The more jacked your immune system is, the more likely you are to alleviate the symptoms. And vitamin C DOES help jack the immune system. So while you may not be getting rid of the cold, you're still fighting off those symptoms that make the cold seem so shitty.

zinc is really good for you too!

jenny: the zpack is specifically that 4 day dose with 5 pills. ive used it and it works ok. i have in general a high tolerance to ALL drugs.

Vitamin C is much more effective when taken all the time before one gets a cold. It boosts the immune system even when you're not sick so when your body does initially come into contact with a virus your immune system is able to fight it off before it infects the body and causes a "cold." When taken during a cold it will just alleviate some of the symptoms.

It's also good to take some zinc when you're sick.

Maybe if what you're taking it for is a bacterial infection. You can't treat a virus with antibiotics, plain and simple. They're two entirely different "bugs".

oh and since we're on the subject, i hate when people say, "put a sweater on, you'll catch a cold". u can't catch a cold from the cold. lol

Posted by AndreaCKY772 on Jun-05-2007 16:20:

this morning i grinded up some vitamin c in the juice...made it more acidic too so it was tasty for me (i don't like extra sweet juice)!

but yeah rest is good. i had to wake up around 5 am yesterday so i could help my mom do laundry while i was at her place and then this morning i woke up early because it was too hot and i didn't turn on the AC.

has anyone here used this medicine that supposedly helps to stop colds before they come on, or alleviate the symptoms? it starts with a z and contains dextromethorphan...i cannot remember for the life of me what it is!! they come in sprays...

edit: zicam is what i was talking about...

i know there is a huge difference and that the penicillin based derivitaves are bacterial drugs. im very aware of that. i was just stating that for me it worked ok. not great but ok. it was precribed for me for bronchitis.

edit//amoxicillin worked better for me.

while this is technically true and i tell people the same thing, being cold does lower your immune system response which can also lead to getting a cold. normally though this only happens when your already on your way to getting a cold but showing no symptoms.

The point that I'm making is that not all illnesses are viral, and they're not all bacterial either. You can't treat a viral illness with the same meds you use to treat a bacterial illness and vice versa, because each "bug" has a different mode of infection and disease process, and therefore the meds are designed specifically for each type.

So then you must have had a bacterial form of bronchitis.

jenny...can you stop and re-read my posts. i never once said that bacterial and viral were in any way treated in the same way. i never even eluded to that.

my now deceased grandfather was a doctor. i called him when i had questions. its not like im not versed in the differences.
