To hell with the money, do you get to keep his surname? "Jamie Cocques Gautier" sounds awesome!

jamie: do you realize that you would have to live with this dude for 3 years? also you would have to be married to this potential douchebag for 3 years. 2.5 technically but it takes 6 months to get divorced now. does it sound very appealing now? imho it doesnt. i know people who have done it though.

for FUCK'S SAKE...read the goddamn first post.

this isn't an offer that was extended to me. i don't know any rich, gay french men. lol

a chick who works in my office asked me what i thought this morning. and now i'm asking you.

to be honest, if this was offerred to me, i most likely wouldn't post about it. i'd just talk to moral hazard about it on msn. lol

I cannot speak for the US, however, Canada has a number of laws in place by which any person who sponsors an immigrant or marries one, is responsible for any and all debts that person incurres with the government for a period of 5 years from the date at which the sponsorship started. This is to say; if I were to marry a non-citizen she would then receive landed immigrant status.... then she leaves me and starts to collect welfare... guess who's on the hook to pay back every cent the government gives her (or spends on her in terms of training or healthcare).. that's right, me. Many people have been burned badly by this (especially in the indian community of BC where arranged marriages with Indian nationals is commonplace).

Again, I don't know if the US has similar provisions and protections in their immigration law, however, I would be damn sure to know the law inside and out before even considering such a thing.

BTW, 20K is too low.

in general this does not exist in the states, BUT sometimes there are certain circumstances that require the immigrant and the sponsor to sign papers saying that the immigrant can NOT collect any sort of social welfare help. so no medicare, no social security, etc. i have a friend that had to do that for her father. they are from england.

It's true people... Jamie and I have not discussed this prior to this thread, therefore, it's a good bet the offer was not made to her.

Posted by Lira on Jun-12-2007 15:26:

Well, she asked you what you would do... so we're now telling you what would've happened if you did

Shes actually a really sweet girl. Shes just working and going to college now at a later age (I think shes a little older than me) and does dog sitting for extra money and listens to country music.

it's a huge hassle. i knew a guy who was paid 20 grand [in installments, as the citizenship process moved forward] to marry a trinidadian chick for citizenship purposes. it seemed like easy money at first, but the interviews (scheduled and non-) and the various investigations and hoops he had to jump through were incredibly time-consuming and stressful and ultimately not worth the dough.

Posted by Slylee on Jun-12-2007 16:22:

lol frenchie i was going to post something similar and be like, "nevermind, i take it back"

ben she's OK. kinda plain jane and she's too skinny. she's like 5'9 and probably weighs about 105. long brown hair with bangs...kinda corny looking, but if she put on a few pounds and let me give her a makeover, she'd be smokin hot. lol

it also depends how bad you need the dough tho

Posted by Ang ' ela_ie on Jun-12-2007 16:24:

Jamie you should tell her she should ask for more. Tell her about the stressful process and stuff. I think that 50k is more like it.

Posted by Slylee on Jun-12-2007 16:28:
