Super amazing night folks, in what I kept telling Nathan would be the "shock and awe" part of Dance 2 Da Beat, in a "growth" process of the event where we wanted to create a fun filled atmosphere, a real "music" feel and a place where the cause is greater then any one of us, I was completely thrilled and floored with the event.
I'd like to thank all of you for coming out, after all expenses were covered (including a paycheck for the SURPRISING Tommie Sunshine) we raised 2750. The goal is NEVER to RAID the pockets, it's to have a good time, enjoy the night... have a wicked party and contribute BACK to the community.
I thank you all for taking part in that!
I hope that Dance 2 Da Beat 2 leads to bigger things for Dance 2 Da Beat 3 (and believe me, the wheels are in motion as the event will be moved from it's HORRID sunday time slot (so sorry about that peeps, but in a building process you take what you can get) on to a Saturday. (Which can only mean MORE PEOPLE.... BIGGER STAGE)
The Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation will be getting a cheque next week. I thank you all for coming out as it was VERY tiring but SOOOOO worth it.
We punched cancer in the face.... the vibe was incredible and like jenny said, with inspiration being LIFE... truly last night was an inspiration, the vibe, the people...
hell, folks, I didn't even know ADDY was going to play.
(But admit it was DAMN NEAR MAGICAL when he took that stage... honoured to have you return at this event, damn honoured. it touch me sir, thank you.)

Was wonderful to see everyone out in force, dancing for people we have loved and lost and who are fighting each day. I am just sorry I couldn't stay longer.

however, i'm pretty sure my response was "I hope not, i hope people are here for them, for THERE loved ones cause that's the only way this event can grow."
HOWEVER,
trust me i do absolutely, from the bottom of my heart appreciate it.
What a great night! I really enjoyed myself.
I spent the first part of the night socializing: exactly what I was expecting to do for the entire night since there were so many cool people there. At some point during the night while having a conversation with somoene, I heard the trademark "Habibi!" accapella. I thought to myself, "It couldn't be... Addy?!" Sure enough, it was him. What a surprise!
Say what you want about him, but to me, a quintessential element of the "Toronto sound" is Addy's trademark bass heavy, grimey and driving sound. It has been missing from Toronto's dancefloors for far too long. In my opinion, Addy killed it last night! The place went from social hour to insta-party from the first "Habibi!".
After Addy, Val and Joee Cons were doing a back to back thing which I really enjoyed. Good work guys!
Nathan played techier than I've ever heard him. I've been waiting forever to hear a no-holds-barred techno/tech-house set from him. Too bad it wasn't longer! Hearing Marco Carola - 'Apnea' from him was a great surprise. Very well done dude!
A little while after Nathan came on, the surprise, Tommie Sunshine entered the building. I knew that there was a surprise, but I wasn't expecting something like this. Good job on getting him Dave!
The event was very well done this year. Very well organized. I will attend this event every year I can. Thanks to everyone that was involved for such a fun night!

The Dance 2 Da Beat - Behind the Scenes REVIEW !!!
Alright folks, I figure i'd let you know how my weekend went. Grab a coke, this could get lengthy.
Friday night, I picked up the CDs for the event at the disturbutors house.... i then went on to make sure everything. I talk to Nathan and he's going to come with me in the morning to pick up Sunshine... a secret held underwraps for about 1 1/2 months (i had started persuing Sunshine.... late March, early April.. THE ORIGINAL plan of Rachael Starr had fallen through due to conflicting issues...
While talking to Nathan, I get a call from Addy telling me he'll be in MONTREAL for the weekend and wishes me luck on Dance 2 Da Beat 2.. .Addy was ALWAYS the mystery entrant EVEN when he wasn't sure if he was playing or not, the spot was left open for him.. had he not been available.. the spot was going to Baby Joel (aka footwork OWNER)
I understood, told Addy to have a safe trip.. and he wished me luck.
Saturday morning....
I call Nathan, see if he's ready....
he is, i pick him up and we head to the airport...
BTW, Nathan told me he said to himself "what should i wear to pick up sunshine"
LOL

ANYWAY!
So we drivin' listenin' to the new roger sanchez release yourself CD we arrive at the airport....
i figure since
1 is arrivals and 3 is departures pretty obvious...
so i park the car, me and nathan stroll in.. go up to help desk and...
(Not OBVIOUS at all)
we gotta go to terminal 3..
so we go back to the car.... nathan's getting his info about his gig in cambridge... and we immediately shoot over and leave
HOWEVER,
friggin' thing doesn't except money.... only credit card (WTF?) there are pay stations inside but i would think at LEAST one person would be able to take cash...
however, the section LOCKS you in..
you can't get out...
we're stuck...
15 minutes till sunshine arrives.
i see an employee in a room
she tells me i have to pay inside
i'm like "i can't get out, if i could, i would..." (like what the hell is going on, why is the airport parking lot on LOCKDOWN for?)
so she says "FINE, 3 DOLLARS"
i pay the lady her cash, she says NEXT TIME..... DO IT INSIDE...
I'm respond with "clearly."
We get there.... find out where we gotta go
and the plane is going to land in 10 minutes, slight delay
WICKED
we walk over and grab some food at a CRAZY MAD EXPENSIVE java joe type thing...
i grab some chicken fajita thing, nathan grabs like fruit salad, a water, a coffee and banana bread
what the.....
weird order...
so we're sitting there, admiring pungjeep and looking at birds... (two birds were whistling and inside the airport terminal..)
OH!
some dude went TRAY crazy, with a water and coffee... pulled off the STUNT of the year.. with his tray tipping and swaying... the bottle of water ROLLED off his tray....
which would cause the other side to lift a bit, that other side a medium double double
the man, turns and sways.. and balances the thing...
nathan jumps to his feet, grabs the man's water... and says "nice save"
only to have the man put his tray on the edge of the counter almost defeating the whole purpose as it hangs over the ledge...
What a dingbat.
So, we decide to walk over.... making jokes how we should make a sign
but really, the dude looks like JESUS.....
so we stand there.. talking about how big of a shocker this was going to be.. and 1/2 hours goes by....
we patiently wait as people come out from the terminal....
now, i think "maybe i should call his agent.. see if anything is up" but i also don't wanna look spazical... sometimes people get held up. So I wait and Nathan grabs a nother cup of Joe.... while getting his cup of joe, nathan notices some dood with a similar hat of his....
wildness.
so he comes back
and I THINK I SEEN JESUS
long hair, pony tail.. but hawaiian shirt? Can't put nothing pass him... so I follow him.. until he hugs some woman and kisses her on the lips, my guess.. not him
so we come back..
about an 1 1/2 hours..
and all of a sudden
my phone beeps
I missed calls
my phone wasn't in reception..... or it went dead..
but i got a msg saying "It's T.S., where you guys at?"
I look to NATHAN and think FUCK...
I immediately text back.... only to have a msg sent back saying "i'm already in a cab going to the hotel"
THIS WAS NOT GOOD
i get called from the agency asking me where was i, it was my duty to pick him up... but i was there, i swear it, and just didn't wanna look spazzy... my phone must have went dead... FUCK FUCK FUCK...
the smile on my face turn to a frown..
the agency said "go to the hotel, give him the cab money..."
NO PROBLEM
the LAST thing i wanted was Tommie upset with me, the dood is a legend, an ALL AROUND nice guy and just a wicked guy...
AND I PISSED HIM OFF!
as I'm driving.. I'm thinkin', oh god.. this is bad....
"Nate, on a scale of 1 to 10 is this a 43?"

All of a sudden my phone rings and I recognize the name but have no idea how he got my number.
It was "government's higher ups"
now, first off... the folks there were AMAZINGLY supportive of this event, helped me out with a LOT of things and always were helpful and accomodating...
but i fucked up and pissed off a talent they work with often
I was in some trouble
I told them what had happened, I apologized profusely and said i was on the way to the hotel IMMEDIATELY..
Nathan backed up my story (THANK GOD someone was there)... and we shoot over to the hotel
after talking to him on the phone.... and with the line "i'm just fried more the a bucket of chicken"
i knew everything be ok, this dood is KILLER
i apologized like mad, offered to take him to lunch, or bring him to lunch.. whatever he wants
he wants..
to hit SAMS.. the RECORD MAN..

Me and Nathan pick him up... head over to SAMS and shoot the shit for a bit, we scroll around the legendary toronto store... Sunshine digs deep in some classics finding HIDDEN gems that he explains to me stuff from 70's soul and 80's UK rock that i'm just in awe that he knows so much.
After about 1/2 hour at SAMs and 1/2 hour at HMV.. and a parking ticket... we head to grab some food at Nana's parents restaurant (Which, IMO best fooooood i've ever eaten.. unreal)
me sunshine and nathan grab some grub.. (nathan did stop to get his record bag for cambridge. he was playing later that night)
and rocked out...
now, while we converse over grub... i kid you not, the taste of italy is RAWKIN' college street but we happened to be next to IMPOSTER ELVIS... REALLY "GETTING INTO IT" with the LONESOME TONIGHT..

poor guy.
Regardless, Sunshine was FLOORED by the food, (as was I, as is everyone usually) as Nathan and Sunshine speak on music, politics, the scene... (which was beyond interesting shit) Nathan books but mentions a wicked place a few blocks away with killer Granitas...

we then went to give thanks to the cook (that night, Nathan's brother Jay... who is just cool shit) sunshine asks about the event, so i give him details, what inspired me to do so....
and i asked him "why he happened to play a cancer benefit the year before on the same date"
oddly enough, 2006, june 17th... he did a cancer benefit.
i found that strange
he gave me the background... and then offered to do a CD for Dance 2 Da Beat 3
(CLAAAAAAAAAAAAASSS ACT)
i thank him muchly.. and we go looking for Granitas...
the streets are RAMMED.... ROCKIN' WITH ITALIANS UBER proud as we walk into this Italian CD store.
Sunshine tells me some of the best music is 80's italian disco.
I was like "WHAT.. COME ON"
he smirks and begins looking through the collection, his music knowledge is BEYOND anything i have ever seen....
we spend like 1/2 in the store, talking about movies... and music.... and he buys a movie for his chick who's back home in NYC...
We leave the store.... and continue looking for those granitas
i text nathan for the name of the place...
baffled that i just chilled with sunshine and nathan all day at his resti and sams... WEIRDNESS
so we find it, order two granitas...
he tells me he's excited to have a nights rest... a good nights rest.
so i drive him to the hotel, he says "call you in the morning ace.. breakfast?'
