Words to live by! Such philosophy.

I'm so sceptical that time travel in any time in the near or distant future may not be possible. I think there would be too many idiots in the future trying to cause shit by changing time. Even though we'd never know of a temporal change, since we'd be part of that change, the massive problems of messing with time would be too staggering... even for the complexities of the universe. The multiple time line theories cannot account for every living thing to create alternate time possibilities, since each branch in a temporal split could itself become infinantly fragmented by outcomes of yes/no decisions within each fragment. Never mind it becoming complicated by individuals messing with a particular time line. The numbers would be too staggering to comphrehend.

Well? Someones gotta have a thought about time.

I don't think there are universes created for every personal decision someone is bound to make (see the romantic douche comedy "Sliding Doors" which stars Gweneth Paltrow, who I don't think is very hot, but everyone seemed to eat her hype back in the 90s).
I think if someone seriously effects a timeline to the point where Johnny#1 (the time traveler) experiences something different than johnny#2 (the person in the timeline he is going to visit), the paradox would cause the #1 universe to just collapse. From that point, Universe #2 is now the dominant timeline and Johnny #2 will make new decisions based on what happened to #1's universe. Maybe in 20 years, when Johnny is faced with the option to time travel, he will not. Maybe he won't even study in aerospace engineering. Maybe he'll jump off a bridge. Either way, his universe is now affected in a different manner than Johnny's #1 (a branch)

there is actually a very intelligent film about Time Travel called Primer:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Primer_%28film%29
which involves a group of garage scientists who accidently discover their device moves items back in time (which in turn they make a bigger scale and put themselves through)
it gets very complicated as the movie progresses as the viewer discovers that the people who start the film may look and sound the same, but they are actually***the same characters from a different timeline***

John Titor destroys Skynet in 2036. Arnold becomes President, and the Fourth Reich is established.

I get a sense that time travel as being more akin to time trickery. What I mean is this. Lets use the example of traveling at or near the speed of light where it has been proven that time has slowed down for the traveler, but to everyone else life goes on. That's why it takes 56 years round trip for traveler to go to the Andromeda galaxy at the speed of light, but 4,000,000 years goes by on earth. To my understanding the traveler really hasn't experienced time travel, it just that he existed in a super-slow state. Anyone on earth, even if the traveler has gone for a another shorter trip, would look like the traveler has traveled forward in time.

If it were to be true time travel, then one could go into the future and come back with future knowledge. Even that wouldn't hold water because the future is dictated by current decisions/events. How can a forward-bound time traveler travel a road that has no real clear path? Also if the traveller could go to the past, then the past itself could not be changed or the traveller would not have made the trip in the first place based on past events.

Unless there's yet-to-be-discovered physics or understanding of reality itself where that understanding of how the universe has no past, present, and future as separate entities, then again I say time travel is not probable.

I believe that the true definition of time should best be described as a passing of an instant. Once that instance has run it's course, then it can no longer be experienced or viewed.

:/ I think that's a direct conflict between science(well, theory) and philosophy(?)(fate/destiny)
I'm a firm believer in the whole "god was a mathematician" deal, so i think if there was some conflict in which a static boolean equation was broken or where 2+2!=4, either the universe will just explode(or implode, whatever), or it have to "intervene", which in turn the theory starts sounding more like the Architect's speech from Matrix Reloaded ("balance the equation or your world will be wiped out!")

Because the people who like Terminator won't be able to tell the difference.

you failed for using T2 as an example, the original is what set off the whole concept and much more deeper/darker.

does time have a default speed?
If time is measured by the rate at which one warps space, is there any possible place in the universe which is in a complete standstill from orbit / inertia / planetary axis? what would happen the object?

Posted by pkcRAISTLIN on Jun-22-2007 04:34:

time's default speed depends upon the speed at which an object is travelling.

Terminator 2 doesn't make sense? Uhhhh...it HAPPENED didn't it? I watched it unfold LIVE on a movie screen a LONG time ago and I didn't hear anyone calling out, "Fakery! Fraud!"

It's funny the skeptics come out of the woodwork now after well over TWO DECADES have passed. Where were you in 1991? Riddle me that, BATman.

Sorry to ruin your day but here are some facts, do you know what those are, that you need to face:

1) Time travel requires nudity
2) Bikers don't know when to quit
3) Young John Connor kicked serious fucking ass at After Burner
4) Guns and Roses are the ULTIMATE music for dirt bikers
5) John Connor was kind of a bitch when he was young but apparently he grew out of that and turned into a scar-faced BADASS.
6) John Connor's friend was EXCELLENT in 'Salute your Shorts'
7) You can never underestimate the power of the backup power source. Can you say, "BeeyooooouuuupppPPPP"?
8) Life is a Highway and Shit
