In any case, Schlessinger was the one who began quoting the Old Testament, so they're pretty much using the same "code of laws"...

That's the only thing that I believe any religion is good for. Is theire a God? I don't know, though I'm more inclined to say that there isn't. Every religion out there has something that you can learn, some moral aspect or various thoughts on life that are of value. That is what I like about religion.

Yes it does make sense.

It has been proven many times that the original texts of the bible are hard to translate as the language is no longer in common usage, and not all words translate from their exact meaning into another language.

For example, there are certain words that mean something in Spanish etc. but that meaning doesn't have a specific word connected to it in an English translation.

Not to mention, a lot of people when translating it through the years, wrote their own interpretations into the translation to better explain what the translation meant. One in particular I know was never originally in the bible is the verse that was something to the effect of "ye who cast the first stone...." etc. This was written in at a much later date when a translation was made.

On top of this, it was also documented that the Catholic Patriarchy altered the bibles text in order to have their people abide to the laws they wanted to enforce.

The bible is absolutely NOT in its original state as we see it in our modernized bibles today.

Anyone who thinks it is, is a bloody nutter.

Sure. However, why is it that the text used in regard to homosexuals, that mind you, is also in the old testament, so often used by the religious sect to enforce their prejudice? I never said it was an exception. The guy writing the letter obviously knows more about the bible than the average person and he's counting on innocent gullible people like you to absorb every word he's saying. Personally I like to look at all sides before making a final judgement.

When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord - Lev.1:9. The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?

I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?

It does not state who should kill him. It just says he should be put to death for working on the Sabbath.

A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination - Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this?

All sins are equal.

Unfortunatley for me, it always ends up looking like a complete farce if you claim to subscribe to a religion yet don't follow it as intended, i.e. to the letter. Any good moral values or thoughts on life that it may contain can be discovered and believed in without religion, so it makes the whole thing seem pretty useless, which is probably why I'm not religious at all.

I actually have a pretty darn good answer to all of those. However, it requires an open dialog with someone who actually cares IF there is an answer.

I can also explain the transition from OT to NT and why its not some kind of divine contradiction.

However, none of you want to do anything than prove how stupid religion is, argue semantics, and hate Christians.

Why bring it up in the guise of discussion when youre just on the attack?

Think of it this way: People a lot smarter than you have devoted a lot more time to it than you, and dont see a problem. Start there.

Ok first, way to make an assumption about my level of gullibility in regard to this. With the way you are quoting your roomie on all of your info, I am willing to bet I know a lot more about Christianity than yourself, so kindly take your judgement and slide it up your bum... kthx

The original letter writer was trying to point out that the verse on homosexuality is also located in the same places that the other crazy verses came from. If we would so quickly disregard the other verses as "out of date" and no longer applicable, why is it that the ONE verse about the stance of homosexuality is still held to its supposed validity?

It's called satire. He is trying to expose the contradiction. That is the point.

There is, however, a verse in the new testament that does reference homosexuality (First Corinthians 6:9-11,) and state that they will not "possess God's Kingdom". On that same verse though, it puts homosexuals on the same level as "people who are immoral, worship idols, adulterers, people who steal, are greedy, drunkards, or those who slander others". I suppose we are all going to hell. (P.S. I copied that straight out of my own bible, so I apologize if there is an error).

If Dr. Laura Schlessinger had quoted this bible verse, the "smart ass" letter would be pointless and irrelevant.

If you are going to argue a point, you cannot go about using information that is considered to be "out of date" and irrelevant to enforce it. That just demonstrates that you're uneducated on the topic, and are only mimicking something you learned from an unreliable, and not up to date source.

First of all, Laura is an orthodox jew refrencing the old testament because jews do not have a new testament, so all of your "their only talking about the old testament and not even thinking about the new testament" arguments are null and void. Second of all, the old testament was largely written in Hebrew, and Orthodox Jews still use the Hebrew texts and not a translation, so your "the translation fucked it up" arguments are also null and void. Thank you very much, quit trying to turn everything funny into some serious discussion. And if you must continue to try and ruin everything fun, at least do your fucking research.

That could be said about pretty much anything ever discussed on this forum. It certainly isn't a forum of experts, more like a bunch of kids who like repetetive dance music and drugs.


My take is that people can believe whatever they want to believe, but it's hard not to go on the offensive with so many zealots around with megaphones on street corners trying to force their views on everyone. Or people trying to amend the constitution to ban same sex marriage. Or a president who quotes the bible on his way to war. Or people blowing up abortion clinics. Or flying airplanes into buildings in the name of God. The list goes on.

So, back to owning Canadians.
