ahh ok sweet.. is there a general rule of thumb to safe overclocking? like never more than a 3rd of the machines power? or something like that?

when im buying all the parts ill run it by you first. it will be me production machine, so emphasis on grunt.. not so much on video card or anything gay like that

haha, no worries man!!

if youre buying a new PC and thinking of overclocking, the important bits are your RAM speed, your motherboard frontside bus speed (and clock multiplier), and how far your CPU can be pushed.

example
my setup:

my mboard has an FSB of 800mhz (400 x2)
my RAM runs at 800Mhz (you want ram that can accomodate your FSB)
the clock multiplier multiplies the 400 FSB.
my clock multiplier is 8 (normally you can set this from 6-8)

therefore 400 x 8 = 3200 = 3.2 Ghz

almost all good mboards these days have very easy overclocking options. but feel free to hit me up with more questions anytime

yeah, i figured that's what it would be for! your taste in music has always been far superior to your taste in games

um, i dont know a whole lot about overclocking, just what i researched before i did mine. the good news is a PC will fail to start if you've pushed it too far. so no worries about doing any damage. it'll normally re-set to stock values as well.

but yeah, run your stuff thru me and ill do some research for you essentially the intel core 2 duos are insane overclockers and worth every penny. if youve got spare time

anandtech.com are a great resource for checking out gear.

my core2duo is overclocked 80%
with a bit more voltage could do a 100% overclock, but I think it's at a point where it's at a good balance

There's a variety of stress applications (prime95, orthos).. if they can run for 24hours straight without hitch, you've got a stable machine - otherwise it's either more volts or go back a bit.. and if your cpu temperatures are within recommended ranges under load, you're all fine then..

on that pc price compare site pkc recommended

Posted by pkcRAISTLIN on Jul-10-2007 04:47:

i dont know a whole lot about monitors, but given acer's long history id go with them.

LG make good TVs so that would prob be my second choice. and id stay the fuck away from ChiMei (unless that's the name of a cute chinese girl).

Posted by sunrise3500 on Jul-10-2007 04:50:

dunno about the chimei
but going by http://axofiber.no-ip.org/inside/mo...d.panels.en.htm
probably the lg or the viewsonic? i prefer the resolution ratio of the lg though

a lot of people have chimei
they're quite popular and a well known cheapie that apparently dont suck. unfortunately i dont have time to get into specifics of the panel inside but yeah..

well, fair enough. but id certainly never buy one! LCD monitors are still in their infancy, and given the really short warranties for dead pixels, id stick with branded companies.

especially since the acer is comparable in price with a better resolution.

the Acer AL2016W and the BENQ FP202W have the exact same panel inside
both are average, and nothing special (although both acer and benq do have better panels, its just those in particular are budget ones)

the lg is SIGNIFICANTLY better than both, id prolly go with the lg personally from that list.
although really, personally I'd spend more and get a 8bit panel and probably a 22", they're very good value for money these days.

to the OP, why not 22"? they're not that much more...

listen to sunrise, asides from his jealousy over not owning a real ninja video card, he seems to know what he's on about.

yes, it's ashame there isn't a single game that can use all that shmancy video power yet :P :P
i play my games at 1280x768 or 1360x768 anyways (with AA though) (cos i play them on tv), so faster than what i have would goto waste.

Posted by pkcRAISTLIN on Jul-10-2007 05:10:

oh yah, im only playing @ 1280x1024 but i like knowing i wont need another new card for ages. and supreme commander does take a bit of juice sometimes...

well ati is absolutely pwning nvidia in vista driver devlopment by miles. and you can play practically all your games and the newest too if you're stupid to be using vista, where as with nvidia, it's very hit and miss and buggy and a little bit slow ehhhh...
atleast nvidia stopped making hairdryers (it's still lol to make fun of the geforce fx)

Posted by pkcRAISTLIN on Jul-10-2007 05:23:

yeah, "stupid" being the operative word. only super-nerds play games on vista currently. im a nerd, but still slow to take on new technology.

no, the nerds know not to use it, cos it sucks.
more your dumbass joe blow "ooo vista, new and exciting, how cool!" use it unknowingly.
maybe another 6 months til it's upto scratch, who knows, but for now, lolololololol

Posted by walter78 on Jul-10-2007 05:33:

GODDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD u guys are funny as

tnx for the help boys. nichol keeps laughing at my 19"flat AOC box monitor and i need to get a LCD (apparently)

Posted by pkcRAISTLIN on Jul-10-2007 05:40:

^^ the only thing LCDs are better for is space. CRTs are still more reliable. hell, my current monitor is 8 years old! only get a new monitor if you have heaps of spare cash. a 19" CRT is still worth playing on!

Posted by gumble on Jul-10-2007 14:12:

21" Sony Trinitron CRT still cranking here Old school and still awesome.

Vista = the new ME.

just skip it like we all did ME and wait for Vienna in 09.

Anything that comes out for Vista only is only targeting 10% of windows population and will be cracked by scene groups regardless.
