I don't understand the deprived and behind bit sorry, but maybe that only applies to Trance.

Its with many genres of music!
Not just that but also concerts- rock/metal, etc.

Sometimes YES we do get quality d.js & its good we've gotten those tech/minimal d.js yes Dean (cant believe you missed out on Mills & Huntemann WTF!) but its not on a regular basis like that overseas, or with a few or more top d.js on one bill playing at same party.

We only get that once in a while here.

And how long do we have to wait to see these d.js in Melb- even if they are so popular can be years before they come here!

Also there are soooooooooooo many more dj's & acts that could be brought to OZ but aren't!

Everyone "could" be brought anywhere, it's a matter of whether they are popular enough here.

We have an international touring every other week, i don't see how you can say things are not on a regular basis. What do you deem regular? I think you're stating the obvious if you're expecting the same acts to come back every few months as that's not realistically ever going to happen.

exactly "whether they are popular enough here"

Danny Tenaglia is one of the World's most popular & respected d.js, yet not POPULAR enough here for say Mark James to bring him down, Why? Because famous kids will cry because he doesnt play electro!

baaaaabaaaaa

So many good d.js that are popular overseas but are not that popular here (or have yet to be given a chance to GET POPULAR here) only a minority-hence the comment why we are so behind! if that makes sense lol.

Not correct at all Missy.

Danny has stated on numerous occasions that these days he'd prefer to play close to home than travel - it doesn't interest him anymore (ie. He couldn't care less if he plays in Australia or not). He was actually booked for NYD two years ago i believe until a promoter in the northern hemisphere offered another $40K or something ridiculous.

Some things are not as they seem

Posted by MiSSyM on Jul-18-2007 07:09:

Danny KEEPS playing in Asia, as with many other good dj.s that do not play in OZ, surely a promoter couldve secured him when he played or comes to play in Asia.

If theres a will theres a way.

Posted by Dean Millson on Jul-18-2007 07:11:

I'm telling you now, it's not for want of trying, trust me

If DT played Melbourne it would be one of the biggest gigs in a very long time, an absolute no-brainer financially - it's got nothing to do with Melbourne/Australian promoters not wanting to book him.

Posted by MiSSyM on Jul-18-2007 07:14:

HAHAHAH speedygonzales quick reply back Dean haha.

IM TELLING YOU NOW

IF I WERE TO WIN THE LOTTO on Sat & thus could then, afford to bring down Danny he would be honoured!

hahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Posted by Dean Millson on Jul-18-2007 07:30:

yes, anyone can be "honoured" to play for the right amount of money, you are certainly correct about that

Posted by RaverSpike on Jul-18-2007 07:55:

dance valley would smash summadayz to pieces imo

aussie parties or festivals i should add, are filled with too many people that give a shit about whos wearing what, and the majority of people have no clue who half the djs (more than half in many a case) even are...

for example... this years future music fest melbourne... the number of people who had no clue who ferry was, or at which era that music came from... mind u i thought cox and ferry fkn rokd the shit out of music bowl, even tho carl cox wasnt having a good time (or so i hear)

not knocking the fresh bloods, but if the crowds were a bit more educated with EDM music, and not just single minded about house music and its various forms, i think the scene in melbourne would be much better

valentino kanzyani is on hardware's upcoming tours page...

ok, being in Adelaide I've never been to Summerdayze, but I can say without a doubt in my mind that nothing in Australia comes close to Dance Valley. The stage production is on a whole different level, the lineups are on a whole different level.

spot on. we had a mate in the states speaking with him and his manager last year and thats pretty much the response we got too for danny. he has plenty of offers on the table! shame as he is such a great dj and id love to see him...

Posted by Dean Millson on Jul-20-2007 11:59:

you know what? i LOVE Danny Tenaglia and have lucky enough to see him play twice and both times the DJ that played after him destroyed him... First it was Demi (at Arc in New York in about 2003) and then Lawler (WMC 2005). I've not yet to see him do a mararthon set, which is where he obviously shines, but unfortunately the two times i have seen him he's just not really seemed into it that much

Posted by AnitA on Jul-20-2007 13:58:

I was lucky enough to experience one of his mighty marathon sets......nothing has ever compared........words can't describe.

I have also heard of his diva like attitude towards long flights..etc...I even remember asking him myself if he was planning on touring Oz and he just shook his head lol So, wishful thinking.
I'll have to catch him in TO or the States again to get my fix.

Posted by Simon00 on Jul-20-2007 18:40:

Well i feel qualified to get involved since i havent been to either of these parties.

Neither of them come remotely close to what this is going to be like in 18 days time.

http://www.ozorafest.hu/

(Yes i know Narcism there is a shortage of unknown Russian shit but i guess i will just have to make do with some of the greatest psy acts of all time)

I sometimes only know half the people on the lineup's. I apologize for wrecking the scene

Ferry is in the past, for a reason. His set at FMF was terrible. I am sure that most of the kids there knew who Carl Cox was

So how do you go about changing the trends then vman? How do we get these kids to turn their back on what they are told is "in" and open their minds? They dont know what this stuff is because they cant hear it, see it or access it easily. They also have the right to like what they choose to like, they are human you know

When I first started going out I listened to nothing but Hard Dance because that is what my friends listened to and what I could access. Its taken me five years to actually get some taste in music and realise what really gets me going.

House music is such a massive part of music and its history. What's wrong with them liking that? Or do you mean cheesy electro?

Maybe you guys need to get out on the street with some banners and flyers saying "SAVE OUR SCENE" LOL! I look around Melbourne and I see such a huge range of successful nights to go to that play House, Techno, Hard dance, Hip Hop, Electro and Tr... oh yeah sorry not trance. Trance people are the one's complaining that there is nothing to do and blaming everyone else for it.

hehehe Liz darling, no need for an apology for not knowing who half the line up is... ok so maybe i should change it to, alot of the kids only know who one or two of the dj's are, mostly because they had an appearance in a MOS Annual or some shit.

And im not saying there is anything wrong with house... i love house... in fact i love all music and especially all forms of EDM music, house included. BUT, you cant say the house music scene in melbourne is up to scratch ?? In fact i would say that its so single minded over here, that we have created our own "CULTURE" of house fanatics... and that is, accesorized, hangbag, cardigan wearing with a hint of emo, bang gangin Electro house.... And you know what pisses me off... they dont even know what Electro is... They called their music Electro... its not Electro, its Electro House... Electro goes back years and years back to the days of Black audiences in the UK listening to electro funk

In regards to the trends liz, and getting people to turn their backs to whats in, its a bit difficult to do that considering House is so massive in melbourne... and i wouldnt exactly say people can be changed im just trying to get across that many melbournites, especially the youngins and so unaware of the present and the past in relation to EDM music...

Ok, heres an example... a few months back i went to see Eric Morillo at QBH... fukin fantastic, loved him for a while now, his choice of songs very broad, and he is a very good dj who loves doing what he does. He even runs his own label. Now to the point of this story, im in the toilets doing number 1's lol, and theres all these blokes in the toilets saying "this music is fuckin shit, wheres the house music?" now these were mainly the younger ones (18-19 yo)... another response i heard was "fuck man this music is awesome im sick of hearing electro house we need more of this shit" and these guys were namely the older (22+ yo).

How can everyone be so one sided about house.... all of a sudden somepeople find it shit because it lacks a certain bassline ??? thats it?

Theres nothing i can do about the scene, and even if i could would it really be effective ? At the end of the day regardless of the quality of the sets played at FMF, i still enjoyed it Alot... it was nice to have so techno, prog house, tech house and trance played towards the end... at least there was something for those of us who still enjoy hearing the music of our roots. LOL

let the flaming begin

PS - vman lubs joo all

Posted by charlee on Jul-21-2007 04:24:

LOL at music of our roots! Dreamtime house!

I would have to agree with you in regards to what is going on at QBH (Famous). The last few times I have been there to see some quality DJs like Steve Porter and Paolo Mojo I have ended up leaving early because the crowd has been so hidious. I am equally as frustrated having to deal with rude young kids who are walking into mirrors and people because they are so drunk. I try not to judge them as I am not exactly known for my top notch behaviour but yes its annoying. While Melbourne's mega venue is pushing that sound and aiming their events at that age group it isnt going to change. Its just your choice as to whether its important enough to you to stick around for your DJ or not (in my case it wasnt).

The Future marketing machine is phenomenal so their events will attract all kinds of people. When you are in an arena with that many people you are all bound to be different.

As for cardigans and Derek Zoolanders walking around, whoever is responsible for that should have to pay!

Sometimes I just think people get too concerned with this stuff and dont just enjoy whats around. If you take the time to look there are some great nights that are pushing some real quality music. Maybe its just what the 18 year olds in Europe like is similar to you so its not so frustrating. But we are a long way from Europe and a completely different continent, you cant compare.

Put your hands up for Melbourne...

Exactly. The scene seems to be healthier than ever at the moment imo. Every single aspect of it seems to be thriving. While Famous is full every week, there are also plenty of smaller, niche/more underground (for want of a better phrase) nights around Melbourne that are getting good numbers. Techno is covered, breaks is covered, house is covered and even trance is pretty much covered (thanks to ben lol). There has always been a more 'accessible' side to the scene, it's just more obvious these days because the biggest club Melbourne has had for a long long time is pushing a very 'accessible' brand of music. But then again, how does that actually effect anyone negatively?

Honestly Vman, if it pisses you off that these kids don't know what 'electro' really is, then you need to start worrying about something important I can almost guarantee that half of them won't be the slightest bit interested in music in another 3-5 years (just like 1/2 the people who were going out to parties 5 years ago...), so it's not going to matter anyway. I think you would find that the majority of punters at regular club nights don't have a wealth of musical knowledge, they're just there to have a good time with their friends. And i don't just mean Famous either, i reckon if i chose someone at Ffour randomly tonight and asked them if they could tell me the difference between minimal techno and house music i'd have well less than a 50/50 chance of that person being able to tell me. I started chatting to some guy whilst in the toilets at Ffour a few months back who, after i told him i was about to start playing, asked me if i could play some of that deep and dirty techno that John Course plays... I just had a bit of a laugh to myself and told him i most certainly would. He rocked out on the dancefloor until almost close and he was having a great time - which ultimately is the idea of going out no?

I was at Paolo Mojo last week and I know quite a number of people who left early because of the crowd, but i was enjoying his set so much (maybe it was more the surprise of how good it was because i wasn't expecting much) that the people around me barely registered. I was almost driven batty at one point by a girl who kept bumping into me whilst she tried to dance, but i just moved away a bit and the problem was solved. After Good Vibrations last year, I probably won't ever go to the bowl again however, because it's such an uncomfortable place to be when there are big crowds in my opinion. But then there were a lot of people saying how fantastic they thought FMF was when i can only imagine that it would have been exactly the same - everyone is different, but that doesn't make anyone more right than anyone else.

The only thing that worries me about this 'culture' that you speak of is that i've noticed n00bs don't look out for each other as much as "we" used to. During a gig somewhere recently i was confronted by a group of three mates on the dancefloor, one of which was clearly very very very inebriated. He was stumbling all over the place and at one point almost fell and knocked his head against the wall. All his mates could do was stand there and laugh, almost egging him on... It made me think that if i had a friend who was in that state, i would be more worried about getting them some fresh air or out of harms/people's way than anything else - but it almost seemed like they thought it was 'cool' or whatever for him to be like that. I think that is the type of ignorance that is truly a negative for 'the scene'...

Anyway, i'm off to go see Anthony Pappa play at the Day Rave. It will be the third time he's been back to Melbourne in almost a year, so things seem pretty healthy from my perspective. I'm also playing after a guy called Phil K who is without a doubt one of the most talented DJ's on the planet. He travels quite a lot these days but always comes back to Melbourne Sorry, but i don't subscribe to the notion that we're somehow behind the rest of the world musically - in fact if it wasn't for Melbourne, progressive house would have sounded a hell of a lot different We're just a little further away which makes it harder to tour people, but we never miss out. I guarantee you would still find pockets of the same ignorant people no matter what country you're in - thats life really

[/end rant]

[time to rave]
