And yes, It's been well established that Vista = Shit.

But DELL laptops are a good alternative if you don't want to buy a mac.

I'm a computer technician

Dell are shit.
I would only buy their LCDs (because they're rebadged Samsungs) and keyboards (because they look awesome!).

Macs, Toshiba (not all), Sony and Asus are the best built laptops in existence. Macs, Sony and Asus all come from one manufacturer, which happens to be Asus itself. Toshiba come from the same shit, low-grade, manufacturers as Dell, HP, Compaq etc. (usually Compal or Quanta) but they are usually smarter about the component grading and manufacturing processes.

Other than MSI (lol...), Asus is the only company to manufacture and retail their own product. Think about that for a second.

(for the dumbasses amongst you: supply chain costs = not there!)

I was talking to you?

Different strokes for different folks but personally i still stick to my earlier arguement that DELL laptops are a good alternative from Macs.

Personally id buy a MacBook - Because there main purpose in life is .. Multimedia.

I'm not anti Asus either. The desktop im currently on is running off an Asus board. Solid brand.. But i hate to see people giving DELL laptops shit.. Theres nothing wrong with them at all.

There desktops on the other hand..

If you had repaired as many Dell laptops (usually one month out of warranty) as me, you would think differently. It's funny actually, I see more broken Dells (from other stores) than laptops we actually sell to our own customers rofl (my boss refuses to stock Dell).

Here is another fun fact:
Their batteries have a notably bad reputation. Sometimes, you are lucky to get 3 months out of one. Like that isn't bad enough, 4.1 million batteries were recalled because they CAUGHT ON FIRE. (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dy...6081400881.html). Yeah... Dell are heaps good quality.

Another point:
Dell offer a 12 month warranty as standard. Asus laptops come with a 2 year international warranty as standard. Many that we have sold actually came with 3 years, at no cost. What does that say about the company's confidence in their own product?

I will agree that upper market Dells are ok. But when you're spending $5,000, it doesn't really matter what brand you go with, they will all be good.

BTW: just FYI... go into the DJ forum and search "dell". A few threads should pop up about hiss through the speakers. That comes from crap quality power supplies, which is another problem occuring frequently in Dells.

Try the same thing for any other brand... for comparison.

Who uses the onboard sound card for productions/mixing anyway?

Bash all you want, I'm not about to have a Mac Vs PC, DELL vs Asus etc debate.. It could go for hours. But i personally stand behind DELL laptops.

actually
Dell LCD's are a lottery - yes, they do use Samsung, but also CMO (chi mei!! yes the bargain cheapest brand ever, and there is a big difference compared to samsung panels)as well as AUO who make absolute rubbish panel's

Yeah you gotta check the individual models. Same used to go with their CRTs, not all of them were rebadged Sony's.

You are truly the worst computer technician ever. Have you ever even opened a laptop?

Heres a bit of education for you... PSU noise will propagate through all signal paths within the laptop. Guess what that means? External soundcard makes no difference; the noise will exist in USB, firewire, PCMCIA, etc. Usually the only options are to do a ground lift (colours the audio signal and usually doesn't even work) or take the ground pin out of the PSU if it has one (voltage will jump to nearest ground when a spike occurs... which happens to be your body).

You're totally entitled to you're own oppinion, I'm just saying your oppinion is wrong and people were valid in not listening to "the computer technician".

I'm such a cvnt. Loves it.

They use different panels for the same model. So yes, the specs they publish for the model may not necesarrily be what you get.

Who ever said i did laptop repairs? did i?
I build/repair mostly desktop PCs. So yes.. I do not know as much about Laptops as desktops.

But from personal experience using DELL laptops, And being around them with the job I hardly ever see them come back for repairs.

Each business is different.. You can't use arguements like DELLs being the most common to come back for repairs because it could easily just be human error majority of the time. Any technician will tell you half the time its the user not the computer.

You say it like Asus have never had a broken board or laptop in there life.. I beg to differ.

And like you said yourself..

Exactly..

Buy a upper market DELL and you will get a solid machine.
Buy a upper market Asus and you will get a solid machine.

You get what you pay for. At $5,000 you can't really go wrong no matter what way you go. Provided you treat it right it should last you a long time.

In the end its not up to us, And i'm NOT going to be apart of a DELL vs Asus arguement. I have better things to do..

To anwser the original question in full - Any laptop from DELL, Asus, Apple, Sony are suppose to be good.. Avoid HP at all costs.

Happy Huntings, I'm out.

If you don't mind a Macbook they're in your price range ($1500-$2000), usually have alot of grunt. If your a student, make sure you order through the education section of their web site for a discount. Also I think the newer ones can boot Windows XP with the Bootcamp software, although this stuff is all experimental until next MacOS release.
