i had a stereotype of americans before i spent the last several months travelling around south america and to my surprise almost every american ive met has managed to destroy that stereotype, most are open minded, great fun to hang around and can drink / party aswell as aussies, smart, well read, can speak spanish better than most other travellers etc. although i guess the americans who travel to south america would be a bit different to those who travel to Europe just like the Australians in countries like India etc are different to the drunken idiot yobbo australians who are giving us shit names over in europe

stereotypes are fun

Excellent post!

As for the show, it has been on since 1990 or 91, I forget. The first season was really good (maybe b/c it was in NY ) and one of the first reality tv shows. But as we all know reality TV isn't really "reality". The seasons just keep getting worse, but still fun for stupid TV. It isnt any better than Big Brother here.

You can watch it here:

Gotta say I wasn't at all surprised Americans weren't like their stereotype. Nor was I expecting them to be like their stereotype.

Although i will say the first day in London I met two meathead football playing Americans, one of which decided to lecture the group in our dorm why he was better than us because he was religious.
Then the next day I listened to two Americans telling some random guy a bit further up the line I was in about how he needed God in his life.
Oh yeah, then there was the chick in Brugge who made a screwed up face when I said I was a scientist and challenged me with "What makes you think you can make something better than God?"

Classy...

MTV diva's racial slur

This Californian babe just might have copped her last look at Sydney's Opera House after the reality TV star launched a racist attack on a Sydney McDonald's employee over her McFlurry order.

The 19-year-old star of the MTV hit show The Real World: Sydney, filmed late last year, has infuriated the Asian Australian community and been panned by US audiences after a recent episode showed her demanding an Asian cashier at the Bondi McDonald's "learn English".

"I'm like, well I'd take the f....n' Crunchie one but I don't know what it tastes like because you wouldn't give me a sample," Trisha Cummings said.

"I'm like, you know what, keep the money, maybe take some English lessons - I'm leaving cause you don't know how to speak English," she said.

from here

how is that actually racist IF the person can't speak english properly? it's not like she said "you're a dumb chink and thats why you can't speak english"

Watch the episode. Aside from the fact none of them seem to have anything really redeeming about them, it's pretty rough.

edit: well by rough I mean she's an arsehole.

i would tell them to learn english as well?

thats not racist, its just practical.

as "shane" the friendly indian offering me cheaper call rates or something found out.

No, she understood perfectly well enough what the girl at the counter was saying, she was just being a complete ass about it.

Ignorant - yes maybe
Racist - no

reminds me of the time i spent 10mins at LAX askin ppl outside for a lighter and they couldnt understand me - until i put on my american accent. never felt so dirty in my life.

have to wonder when US tv shows have subtitles for english shows too :/
