Just get a PC and partition it... load Linux on the other side. Done and done.

Because people that hate Mac's will find any way to say they're shitty

Macintosh is such a stupid name

Well even then, Macs are totally capable of burning data CDs. I mean seriously, that CD-burning argument is just terrible.

Partition? Wipe Windows and go Linux-only if you're gonna do that.

come on guys, give the lady a proper answer. I'd suggest it depends on what you want out of things. Mac's aren't compatible with some stuff you may want/need, and windows can be a bitch to run other things.

THIS is your proper answer? At least the two guys that posted a thesis had valuable advice, even if they were bickering

While macs are expensive... I would say that buying one has THE BEST investment I have ever made. The lack of freezing, viruses, all other CRAP that I see every ten seconds on Windows is non-existent.

yeah. i kinda started out trying to be useful, couldn't think of anything & left that deposited where something good should've been

did anyone mention that each Apple comes an autographed picture from Steve Jobs?

Re: mac vs pcy

just one point i have to add that i am surprised no one mentioned yet. what is the actual purpose for a cd burner for a student other than backing up data and making cds? if you want to save documents, you don't want to have cd-rws. Thumbdrives ftw here.

i am not a mac basher. i am not a pc basher. i do know that mac is good for certain things, and pc is good for certain things. If you want a mac, it's cool, but you should be aware of certain software to have to be applicable with pc users such as (mac users can correct me or add to the list):

*Safari / Opera for webbrowsing
*Adium for instant messaging
*OpenOffice for word processing

I am sure the most frequent types of files being passed back and forth are picture files, document type files, and media files. If you're sending out executables to a mac user, that user is basically screwed.

Any mac users want to give their testimonies for/against thumbdrive/external device mounting on a mac os? i can't really say much about that, because i am a windows/linux hybrid guy. i guess that is important in the future.

i guess that covers "the good the bad and the ugly".

with windows XP pro,

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/pr...pc/default.mspx

and live happy...

I use a western Digital portable 160 gig hard drive, about the size of a deck of cards, on my Powerbook and my t60p. It goes back and forth no problem, and I am able to store files of both types on there with no issues either. Thumbdrives will be the same way.

I wish I had a mac book pro, a bunch of programmers from my school are picking them up now for personal use after they spent years bashing the Macintosh platform. They are really one of the best all around laptops out there now.

what can you do on a mac that you can't on a pc

Posted by Sunsnail on Aug-12-2007 02:17:

Use the plethora of mac-only products.

Firefox runs on a Mac. Safari is a pos.

True, I forgot about that. But I always like to make sure I have a back up in case something happens to either the schools/my own computer. So having it on a CD is a good idea, but just to print something out...sending it to yourself is better. I've only lived a few minutes from all the schools I've been to so I don't really have to worry about that.

Let's see...how can I explain it clearly so that you'll understand....well....hmmm.....a mac is a lot like a 20 something year old yuppie who goes to a local town college and binge drinks on the weekends....no wait...hold on...a PC is a lot like a white collar businessman in a suit who....

...ah to hell with it. Just buy yourself a gold plated vibrator.

man sometimes i do wish students would find out if universities gave out free web publishing accounts if registered as a student. i remember when i was in college, i had a regular college and cs web accounts, so i had a WHOOPING 200 mb of space to store my data (/sarcasm). the days before thumbdrives. i loved to ftp my stuff from home to school all the time. i would mention ftp to my non-cs classmates, but they looked at me weird.
