Damn straight. God damn I want to shoot someone when some massive SUV is riding my little honda's ass. It would get it's ass kicked in a car fight.

What good are SUV's if you're not going to off-road them?

Sometimes it's funny, sometimes it's scary, but it's ultimately offensive to realize how easy it is for people to get licenses. Multiple choice questions, then a 10 minute driving test where half the points come from fake shit like "let me tap the rear view mirror with my pinky."
If someone can't handle the responsibility of safe driving, there should be no complaint in revoking all driving privileges and getting them a unicycle.

maybe not anger, but sure is something like it.

As for safety, I'm of two opinions about 4WD's. They're good on unsurfaced or very rough roads, however they have very poor road holding when it comes to high speeds, corners and you can do what you want to them to try and improve it. But they're still at the mercy of physics.
Safety is quite subjective to the self it seems, no one thinks of what happens to the people you might happen to hit, they're not safe.
It's harder to pull up 2-3000kg than it is to do the same with 1500 and you can't do much except lower the vehicle when it's mass is much higher, that defeats the purpose of having a 4wd, which is ground clearance.
People movers do a good job, they hold a lot of people, cargo and they're not just a converted van chassis any more.

4WD comes in all sorts of vehicles--not just SUVs, and not on all SUVs, so the handling argument (aside from the point about the higher center of gravity) is a moot point.

As for who you're protecting, the desire to save yourself is a natural & normal one. There's nothing wrong with placing your own safety first.

There is something to the avoid/minimize argument, and for that reason, a lot of people don't go with SUVs (the ones who don't need the convenience, anyway), just because it is easier to avoid some accidents in the first place, but there will always be accidents you can't avoid, and, in all likelihood, those are the ones in which you'll need all the help you can get to walk away safely.

Most people don't like the look of station wagons. It's not reasonable to think that everyone should abide by your own assessments of the relative utility & convenience of vehicles.

most SUVs aren't made for off-roading.

Bad driving is irritating, regardless of the driver/car, but there's no sense in wasting energy on it, especially based on the source.

Posted by shaw on Aug-13-2007 23:59:

also, this all boils down to a very simple idea.

If you think SUV drivers are safer than others, then buy an SUV. If you think the safety of them is outweighed by advantages of size, convenience, gas mileage, price, & image, then you've made the choice to buy something else, and should be able to recognize that someone else made a different choice (and one that you could also have made).

I'm not angry, but at least I'm not here just to be 'devil's advocate' either, I've owned an AWD turbo Celica all the way up to a South African ex-military Landcruiser.
Both have their place, the former for road holding the latter if you're getting shot at occasionally and go on rough roads.

what's wrong with playing devil's advocate?

Posted by Lilith on Aug-14-2007 00:07:

It's amusing I suppose if you're entertained that way.

Posted by iclone on Aug-14-2007 00:09:

as a middle-aged druggie and alcoholic, i occasionally live in my toyota 4runner. true story.

Posted by shaw on Aug-14-2007 00:11:

Not so much entertained by it as I am irritated by hearing the stereotype bandwagon rolling through town, blasting the same old anthems.

Posted by Lilith on Aug-14-2007 00:15:

There's a reason stereotypes exist, it's basically because we aren't all little individual, special snowflakes nearly as much as numpty PC-education systems and advertising like to make us out to be.

Posted by VAR on Aug-14-2007 00:18:

well i finally bought a new vehicle,
what do you think?

The Grizzly

Posted by shaw on Aug-14-2007 00:18:

and none of those hiveminds is big enough to include everyone. There's no single stereotype that's universally applicable or even accepted, no matter how many people in one circle can laugh at it.

The whole SUVs = crazy, hick soccer moms from bumblefuck, USA, who vote republican for no reason, hate gays, and are too stupid to understand the environment is what's behind this plug, anyway, and it's just tired and ignorant.

I've watched the Grizly in action on Future Weapons. I hate the anchor of that show. Comes off more like a twat than anything else. Anyways, but the Grizzly is an awesome truck with V-bottom design and all for IED protection. Have they been deployed in Iraq yet ?

i don't watch tv much, so i have never seen the show.
Blackwater knows what they are doing.

Incon, i agree with your statements, very well said.

If somebody's paying $6,000+ per year just for a lease on something, it's not so insane, especially since a much more reasonable number, like 20 mpg for 10,000 miles is only an extra 500 bucks a year. OMG HOW DO YOU PAY FOR GAS is a pretty pointless question.

over a period of about (just under) two years, i spent about $2100 on gas. (made a thread about it, somwhere).

$2100 / ~23 months = <100 a month.

relatively affordable, especially when the truck payment is $371 a month.

I was referring to the cost of the increase in gas prices only--not even total cost (from $2 to the current $3 or so).

So yeah, I was being more than conservative with those figures

Posted by shaw on Aug-14-2007 01:00:

I think it's about 2.80 or 2.90 here.

haven't done much driving lately.
