No one is forcing you to do it, but why would any smart employer ignore an advantage that significant? Besides, the whole point is that spanish is supposedly becoming a significant part of american culture, at which point it stops being just "their" language.

I can only see good coming out of this. Another language would enrich the culture greatly. Besides, I've always thought native english speakers could benefit greatly from speaking more than one language (and I'm sure alot of people would agree with me on this), and what better way to do that than to be immersed within it's culture?

No one is forcing anyone to learn another language, the job market is competitive as it is. Its just a known fact being bilingual has a big advantage over the person that isnt. No matter what language it might be.

I don't care what it is, my kid isn't learning it....as a requirement.

Posted by chach on Aug-14-2007 18:11:

I would leave it up to my kid what language it wants to learn.

Well if they can't speak English, then learning another language is a good thing.

half the fm radio stations in los angeles are spanish.

The bay area and all of California in general is a mixed bag of languages. YOu can go into four stores and deal with four different languages and none of them will know much, if any, english.

It's just how it is. You learn how to get around with how it all is and while it's crazy annoying, it doesn't bother me so much.

What does urk me is when I see little kids who I am going to imagine were born here speakign a foreign language and when someone who speaks english speaks to them it's obvious they barely know any.

My fiance is latina (mexican-cuban) and she doesn't konw too much spanish. The rest of her family does though. Think it all has to do with your family surroundings and just the area you live in. And your friends.

I can see where you're coming from with this. But from my perspective, this is going to cause a lot of racial tension and divide with not only the whites and Mexicans, but legal and illegal immigrants also. The majority of conservatives here in the States are not for learning another language, they'd rather have the immigrants learn English instead. They're already upset that Congress tried to pass an amnesty bill here a few months ago. Complicating things more are groups like La Raza demanding equal rights for non-citizens here, and suggesting that the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo be overturned.

And what about other immigrants coming from non-Spanish speaking countries to live in the US? Would you really have them learn 2 languages just to be able to survive here? English is already difficult to learn as it is.

It's one thing to suggest that we learn Spanish to enrich our own culture, but it's another thing to be demanded by foreigners to learn it simply to accomodate them. I would hope both the Democrats and the equal rights groups would back off on pushing this agenda, because if they keep throwing this on our faces, there won't be any benefits coming our way, only conflict.

I think his point was, if they can't be arsed to read or write English properly, what makes you think they'll be able to or want to learn Spanish too?
