good thing it was on land tho - and not an underwater one, that would have sent a tsunami into peru...

Not really, to have a tsunami the quake has to be very far away from the coast to give it time to build up. If it's too close to the shore, it can't pick up enough water or speed to cause any major damage.

This is causing a shit tonne of problems for people flying. I spent the entire day calling airlines finding out about their flexibility policies for people in Hawaii, and other various places experiencing natural disasters. This is the beginning of the season for this type of shite.

Well, it's not "normal" I suppose but it isn't "unexpected."

natural disasters have seasons ?

Posted by RandomGirl on Aug-17-2007 04:11:

Hurricanes have seasons, floods have seasons, tornadoes have seasons, and they can predict when earthquakes will "season".

when's the last time you heard about a winter tornado?

Posted by Omega_M on Aug-17-2007 04:16:

i was being more specific about the earthquakes.

yeah, idk about those, either.

Posted by Echo of Silence on Aug-17-2007 04:19:

Sorry, there is not an earthquake season.

Posted by RandomGirl on Aug-17-2007 04:20:

As far as I know, earthquakes can happen at any time, and there is no particular "earthquake season".

When I said "This is the beginning of the season for this type of shite," I meant that it is the beginning of the season for the most natural disasters going on.

This time of the year is horrible for traveling. There are hurricanes and shite going on all over the place.

earthquakes around the world are in season, every season !!

Season is a synonym of words like "blossom", "culminate", "evolve", "arrive" etc.

They can predict when an earthquake is going to "arrive".

No, we can't. We wish we could. Hopefully, someday we will be able to predict earthquakes.

No earthquake has ever been preidcted?

Sigh.

We can not "predict" earthquakes.

I suppose I could sit here and type "there is going to be an earthquake tomorrow" every day and one day, I will be correct and then I can say I predicted that earthquake!!

But, no.

Posted by Frenchie on Aug-17-2007 04:39:

"omg sigh"

If I wanted your sarcasticness I would have asked for it, smartass.

I don't know shit about earthquakes, there for I was asking the person who obviously does, you, for answers.

Posted by Omega_M on Aug-17-2007 04:40:

Lot of research is going on in this field atm. Sensing systems that can detect seismic activity and predict the occurrence of earthquakes do not exist. For the moment, watch out for odd behavior in your pet. If he /she starts to act up strangely, get out of the house ASAP !!

I suppose you didn't read the post I made right before your post.

Now, of course you don't have to ask for my "sarcasm" just as I have never had to ask for yours.

If you can't take it, stop dishing it out, missy.
