I normally don't give them anything, unless i basically feel forced to. Some of them come on really strong and it's happened once or twice where i've felt like i had no choice because they would just stand there looking at me and i had nowhere to run to lol

they need all the help they can get.

I'm quite generous...with my contempt. Which I freely give to anyone under the age of 40 who looks able bodied and capable of earning. Beggers are a blight on this city, especially the Markham homeless who gather on Queen street in their Nike kicks and $150 jeans.

If I give it's usually in the form of food. I'll buy someone a slice before I give them a loonie. At least that way I know where my money is going.

if you don't want to give them money, look at them and tell them no, a smile would be a bonus.

not looking at them/ignoring them is the worst we could do, it pushes them over the edge to make stupid/violent things.

Imagine if a hundred person/hour ignored you when you talked to them.

Happens to me everyday here. I think most telemarketers and Jehovah's Witnesses would also agree that it happens a lot. I Live in Japan so that's my excuse I think everyone here is afraid of me. You just have to take it in stride, that one smile back though definitely can make your day feel like a million bucks. I always smile to and try to take the polite way when dealing with 'social undesirables' (pardon the crude term).

This is so true. And if you do acknowledge them - even if it's just saying "sorry, no" - they generally say thanks....and even the odd "have a good day" as well.

A little bit of humanity (not charity) goes a long way.
