If it's billions of light years away, doesn't that also mean that it may have changed since then...meaning, it's probably not a vacuous hole anymore? A lot can happen in a billion light years. Lame.

Not necessarily. The hole might have gotten much bigger since then, for all we know. One of the explanations for the hole's size is that more mass-dense parts of the universe are "sucking" all the matter away from the less-dense parts bordering the hole.

Yeah, I took integrated science last year. My professor actually did a neat demonstration to help understand that concept. The old, "tennis ball in the mesh screen representing the fabric of the universe" trick.

It's the technology that will enter into the commercial industry, not the end product. New type of electronics, algorithms, materials, optics etc that was developed for this particular application will eventually find a commercial use elsewhere. So much of the NASA technology is in the commercial domain now. It does not mean that people are using NASA rockets to fly around.
