kinda off topic, but the whole thing about workers compensation in real jobs..

you work at some corporate office and are slightly expendable IE a secertary or similar and you get into a car accident while on vacation boozing with your buddies... you cant come into work for 3 months b/c of injury...
they'll either A. Fire you or B. don't fire you but surely don't pay you anything b/c you arent there at work producing/ working..

in the Military if you injure yourself in any way you'll still get paid full salary... regardless if its a DUI or not... and for however long you are inable to make it into do any work... (and of course all medical for everything all the time is free, no payments for anything, not even prescription, although i do think births are $10)

one cavaet though...if it is a DUI or your deleberately injure yourself there will be an investigation and those medical bills could be subject to payment....

after this reply I'm gonna suggest that the original question was deliberately asked for so you could make this response wasn't it?

You knew you would get the answer you wanted to allow you to say this

Why would people voluntarily join an army for a gov't that does shit all for them. They aren't even properly taken care of when injured, and their families hardly get shit when someone dies.

so you read ONE article and made that judgement on everything. you of all people i thought would have some kind of open mind about this kind of stuff.

especially coming from someone who was waiting in the hospital "on death's door" yet your canadian gov't told you to just sit there and wait.

people join the services for a numerous amount of reasons, same way people join or want to get hired by businesses. The armed forces is just a business, when you really look at it. we get paid to do a job...its just our job's mission may differ from oh, say, microsoft. but do microsoft employees get health care? yup. and would they get "workman's comp" if injured on the job? sometimes/depends on the situation.

Generally speaking, if someone was seriously injured, and could no longer serve in the armed forces, they would receive compensation for it. this is GENERALLY speaking. there's always those outlying cases where circumstances (sp?) change the outcome. but you hear about this in the civilian world too....Mr. John Smith works at factory 'A', gets severely injured on the job, can't work, but because he wasn't part of a union, or for whatever other outlying reason, doesn't get workman's comp or whatever. has to sue business to get any kind of money.

No. After reading that article I was feeling pretty emotionally charged, and out of anger expressed it via that post.

I don't specifically like the American gov't and the way it operates from what I know and understand, but I already stated that I don't know everything about it, and do not know how a lot of it works. Therefore I cannot really make much of an intelligible dissertation on whether the whole gov't is corrupt.

Which is why I asked, TYVM.

you get medals for being injured by enemy combatants... you can be sitting on the crapper and a mortar hit near you and a piece of shrapnel nick your toe and you'll get a medal....

it's very nice to get medals, and i understand you guys there in the army value it a lot.. but personally getting medals wouldn't make any difference to me.. if it's a very minor injury it wouldn't add anything to my life, if it's a very serious injury getting a medal wouldn't help anything.

the medals do absolutly nothing towards anything as far as promotions or job preference, but if you are merited it why not wear it?

it might bring some respect to somebody who doesnt know you and see's your accomplishments on your uniform... it gives a good first impression... IMO

The US Federal Government has a department specifically for Veterans Affairs. Veterans are eligible for medical care at hospitals specifically run by the VA and it's subsidized, but I don't know how much they pay or if they pay at all.

However, that department, despite what the Bush administration trumpets about how well it cares for its soldiers, is heavily stressed because of budget cuts. Don't jump to conclusions that Americans weren't outraged about the Walter Reed scandal, because it was actually a very, very major news story in America. And to be fair, the only reason major public attention was drawn to how poorly run the facility was was because the Washington Post investigated rumors about it. It's a double-edged sword.

But it's not the only problem. Recently, a soldier from my state came back from Iraq and tried to get into a Veterans hospital and was put on a waiting list and subsequently turned away. He hung himself a few days later. There are a lot of problems veterans face but for a wide variety of reasons. The VA is simultaneously poorly run and underfunded, but that is less the fault of the US military itself as it is a civilian government that doesn't realize the vulnerability of people who serve in the wars.

dear Perfect_Cheezit,

a thoughtful answer to a impulsive question is wasted effort.

I will always respect anybody who's in any branch of the armed forces.

As far as the topic goes, it doesn't change my mind. So, I'll never be thinking "What an idiot he is for joining the army/airforce/marines/national guard/or whatever." Hell, I wanted to be in the army

thats rediculous. you can never have an ENTIRE government system be corrupt....that's saying that everyone from the president all the way down to your city Mayor is all part of one large elaborate scheme.

and as much as everyone hates America (which is getting old, really), and how ever much loose change bullshit you read about on the internet, there's bound to be at least 1 person in the howevere many thounsands of people who are part of the governmental system that isn't "corrupt".
