| GT, D4Dirty, System101 - let's say if two of you give Anthony the thumbs up, he's back in the competition. |
I'm too tired to say anything else, its OK.
You're right - I disregarded that particular rule. We all have our particular viewpoints on the "hard rules" and "soft rules"...from now on, it's easier to say that all the challenge rules are written in stone...
I was aware of the 3 minute rule, but by the time the song structure had come together the length of the track was what it was. I could have done some editing to get the length down and still have it work as a track...I'll make sure for the next challenge!
Okay Anthony, post a link and you're through!

so i guess anthony is not in the competition?
yeah, work did a real number on me this week so i'm out, but will be watching over. i also have the accapella for you guys for week 4.
omg did I miss the voting?
Branah, there was no voting this week because we had a number of withdrawals, so the remaining competitors go through to challenge 2. We'll hopefully get voting of some kind happening this week, so check the week 2 challenge thread when it appears!

Sure would!
ahm ok, I've been really busy with some exam and stuff so I thought I missed the whole thing...
No prob, here's my comment
. But, as I think I'm not as experienced with producing as you guys (I've been doing it for a few years now, know a lot but still think I've got a lot more to learn
), I cannot go into fine details that much, so I'll try to concentrate on what I think I can comment...
Everyone did pretty well, your sound is pretty good, this'll be a really tough competition. I understand you didnt have that much time to mess with everything so I keep in mind that you could do better, keep it up.
Ok lets go with the critics (If I concentrate on the irrelevant stuff too much, ignore it
)
D4Dirty - Productionwise, really good work. The mix is pretty good too, I think the track has a nice drive to it. Did nice with the guitar too, but since I'm not really into this style I cannot tell you much more. Personally I dont like the sound of the heavy bassline that much,its a bit too rough imo, but that is also probably just a matter of taste too. You were the best with FX though thats for sure, and overall I think I see a lot of creativity.
Fabrik Europa - This track is a lot closer to the style I like, you've also achieved a good sound. What you did with the sample was good, one thing I dont like that much was the whole arrangement, doesn't really get me anywhere (dunno if arrangement is important this week though). I also think the kick is a bit stronger than it should be, but overall the track is pretty good.
GT - You've got a great mood out of the samples, good work. I like your added guitar melody starting at 2:06, fits great with the whole track. On the other hand the arrangement feels a bit simple, the 3 minutes seemed to me like twice that time. I'd say you did well with the sound, keeping it simple and not overcrowded so it sounds relatively tight. The hats could be a little softer (they go too high for my taste), but overall pretty good stuff.
System 101 - I like your track, it sounds pretty dreamy and calm, I dig this style. Your sound is very good, as GT you kept it pretty simple with minimum percs, so one cannot really tell how skilled you are with them productionwise (from this sample). I also couldn't recognise the samples
Where's the guitar?
One more thing I like that it doesn't go too high, it has that somehow natural percs. As far as the track goes this would probably be something I'd most likely listen at home from the 4 tracks.
ahh my hands hurt from this whole writing
... In the end I think you all did a good job, and the actual voting would be a really tough choice (you guys are all pretty good and really no one stands out at this stage) - I'd maybe go for this:
1. GT (cause of what I said earlier, and maybe a little because of the nationality, haha
)
2. D4Dirty (for the most original sound eventhough I dont like the style at all
)
and I really couldnt decide how to vote for System 101 and Fabrik Europa, if System 101 had used some guitar/samples I'd probably put him in first place, but IMO it's easier to put up a track from scratch than with an already presented sample. Fabrik also did really well, but I dunno in the end the slight differences in track styles made me do this kind of a list...
ah I cant write anymore
enough for tonight
cheers
Thanks for taking the time to provide all that feedback Branah, very much appreciated! We'll all do our best to get your vote this week!
Awesome awesome feedback there! thanks a lot.. incase you're wondering where the guitar is... its actually throughout the entire track, most audible at the beginning (the plucking sound)... then once the beats start i filtered it lower and started bringing it back up around 1:58...
it was a sample that was provided in the guitar pack for the competition, i just did a lot of work to it to make it fit to the track!
so i'm not sure if i should take your comment positively or negatively about not hearing the guitar... i guess i did a good job making it fit in the mix? lol
hey guys, you're welcome
you deserve more comments definitely...
System101, as for the guitar thing, the point is I didn't notice it (and I still dont really distinguish it as a guitar, sounds a lot more pianoish to me
, as you said you processed it a lot), which doesn't neccesarily mean you have to take the comment neither positively nor negatively
. I mean the thing is, thats my view, as far as taste is concerned I like your track best, but since this is a production thing my opinion is that somehow you had it easier without the in-your-face guitar sample. I understand the rules, saying that you dont have to use any of the given samples, but I personally like it when there's a limit the producers freedom so you can see how well he'll act and find his way out of it. But thenagain maybe its just me
, dont bother yourself with it.
I'm def gonna listen to this competition till the end, and if I get time blast some comments again (which I'm sure you'll do too when I upload some of my work in the near future
)
Keep it up guys!
