As close to a perfect night out as I have ever experienced. The perfect number of people with tons of room to dance, which was totally unexpected. Unreal.

I couldn't have said it better myself. I went in with high expectations....and they were met. Howells played such a smooth, well calculated set. His transitions from funky, to prog, techno and back around, seamless. I was in my tunnel...riding that train....i couldn't stop dancing. By about 2 o'clock, I turn to my buddy and say: "As long as Howells doesn't f*&% it up before the end...this is going down as my party of 2007."

Well he didn't f*&% it up!

Oh...that earlier comment about him playing to proggy near the middle of his set.... Danny is a prog DJ.... so.... that's what he's gonna play at some point....

I have seen Howells play as part of a larger list of DJs at the Guv, but this was an out of body experience compared to that night.

Danny Howells played the closest thing to a PERFECT set...all 7 hours! I simply could not believe the consistency with which he took us on this journey. It blew my mind...you could clearly tell because my jaw did not leave the floor for over 6 hours. It was hard to time bathroom breaks or go out side to cool off. There were very few "weaker" tracks, of which there were maybe 4 during the entire set (weaker tracks by him still killed anything the likes of Danny T or anyone else has recently played as "strong" tracks"), were welcome respite from the (sometimes)stuffy air and bulging bladder.

I consider myself fairly well educated on progressive and tech house and I only recognized FOUR or FIVE tracks over the entire 7 hour set! Wow, where do you come up with all that great shit, Danny??

Danny had a very consistent pattern where he played about 3-4 funk/prog tracks, and then would drop a tech bomb. I noticed he did this throughout the evening, and the frequency of tech bombs increased slightly during the last hour or two...brilliant "progressive" programming that built an elegant set that carried the crowd from beginning to end. It was art. It was serene.

To the people at Footwork (Stefan and the rest), great f&*@ing job on upgrading the sound system and reinforcing the walls, that place has really come a long way from where it was before. It is now my new favorite venue for music.

And, btw, I am happy to pay the $30 or $40 to get in to the club...I think it limited the crowd to only loyal fans of the genre and the DJ and made the whole night much more fun.

CLUB OWNERS PLEASE TAKE NOTE: If you expect us to pay a substantive cover charge, don't oversell tickets. That night could have been spoiled if the place had been overpacked (i.e. like the Guv). Luckily it was not, lets keep it that way and not get greedy.

Great review! I agree with you about the cover and FW:P

I felt there was more bad than good....The vibe in the place was great and there was plenty of room to dance..But as for the tunes I wasn't really feeling them..And after seeing Lawler destroy it on friday night Howells just couldn't compete

I think we can clear up this situation with one simple question: Were you at Danny Tenaglia at Labor of Love this year and did you think that was a good set?

Thats exactly whatt he did , & WTF tune was that , right after he dropped it from Progg to Tech , it Was Unreall ...

This was easily the best extended Danny Howells set I've heard; easily beating the 2 previous times at System (RIP) on New Years and in April 2005. I don't think I've ever been this "shell-shocked" after a Danny Howells party as I've been after this one. Well, there was that party in Poland but that just isn't fair to compare.

Now I'm even more hyped for Burridge in 3 weeks...

I have to totally disagree with you on that one.

I usually don't react to a lot of posts but when I read this one I have to say, Ryster, ARE YOU HARD OF HEARING or do you simply lack good taste in House Music???

The party was about one thing and one thing only = HOUSE MUSIC AND ITS FOLLOWERS.
Howells did what DJ's are supposed to do, he dropped tracks that a crowd would normally never hear anywhere else or by anyone else. It's not about being able to hear the same tunes you hear on beatport or on your computer. If you wanted to do that, just stay home.

Sorry to those who did not have a good time, your ticket would have been put to better use by somebody else.

What Danny did Saturday night is a perfect example of a great 7 hour set. It started off with ripples of progressive and then BOOM, he'd hit us with a tsunami of bassline.

Danny is the Manny!

Toronto finally got a sweet injection of great tunage and it was thanks to a lil' gem called Footwork!

That is all.

Not necessarily. Some people just need more time...

...but ya, it does boggle my mind a little bit as to how someone didn't enjoy it. I've seen Danny like 10 or 11 times. Last time I missed him play in Toronto was...........2003 I think. And while it hardly makes me an authority on him (considering Amanda saw him like 30 times or w/e, LOL), this was easily the best set I've heard him play in Toronto.

Every time I left a Howells party I was always left wanting more, because it was never quite good enough to what I know he's capable of. Saturday night was different though.

don't get me wrong, next day at work all i could think about was how awesome it would be if he played another extended set on sunday night, but at the same time i was completely satisfied.

Yeah, I don't think so...you pretty much like Howells after the first time you see him or not at all, IMO.

I bet there may be a direct correlation: if you weren't happy with Howells at Footwork, you probably LOVED Danny T at Labor of Love this year. Danny Howells was an amazing symphony of warm melodic sounds and hard hitting prog/tech house IMO, while Danny T's set was pure GARBAGE.

Posted by PurpleHaze on Sep-24-2007 21:29:

Ok.....where to start

Starting off a few weeks back I knew of prog; listened to a few sets but it just didn't impress me back then... I was listening to it all wrong

I had my mindset on seeing Marco V the whole time, and I mean pretty much the WHOLE few weeks right untill 8:34pm sat night when I woke up from my dream about how good howells would be at footwork if I went to see him. This was after a lot of attempts at persuasion and threats to kidnap me/drug me and take me to see howells because this was NOT an event to miss apparantley....and boy was I ever glad to miss out on Marco V (again...).

The progression and added layers of music throughout the night was just a pure blissful mindfuck, and at points in time I couldn't believe the sounds coming out of the speakers. Danny Howells at footwork this saturday is what i can mark on my calendar as the day that I advanced furthur into EDM grasping onto prog.

Ever since FW and the boat cruise yesterday I've gotten a whole new description and meaning to prog and I will continue on this pathway for a while to come!

Can't really explain it enough but it was definately one of my top parties and definately changing in my EDM perspective.

Great review. Just one little correction: there was a whole lot more than just "prog". I wouldn't really refer to Danny as a prog DJ.

Haha, I'd die. I don't think it's possible to do that sober.

P.S. Oh yeah, it was nice meeting you SasH. And lame not meeting Jimbo or Frenchie, you antisocial bitches.
