Cool, that's where I'm at.

I'm on my own living in a bum fuck red neck small town in Australia with no one to learn off or help me.All i have learnt is from the net apart from keyboard lessons.

I think the original question was a very good one! It's something I can certainly relate to, and obviously many of you do.. I too am "completely on my own" in terms of learning (other than my music buddies over the years) who have been amazing/patient! The internet has enabled us all to reach various forms of 'help' but nothing can beat actually sitting down with someone who knows what they are doing and can answer questions with your sequencer of choice in front of you...

I'm an 'active' learner (so my psychology teacher once told me) so I reckon I could have nailed years of trawling through websites, PDF documents and quicktime movies in the space of 10 minutes with a bit of hands-on guidance... Again, good topic, AD.

I was checking out this site that offers tutorials over skype herehttp://www.samplecraze.com/tutorial.php and was thinking if anyone wanted to we could use some remote desktop software with some sort of sound software and show eachother tricks.

I'm a Cubase user so would only really want to talk with similar users altho if someone was using the same synths that would be ok I suppose

Seriously... finding an EDM producer in the US of A is like finding a country musician in Holland. Finding Americans who listen to EDM is like searching for a four leaf clover.

I'm glad that I have the internet.

+10 on that!!

A lot of people I know who aren't into this stuff can't figure out the difference between DJing and Producing. It seems to be a totally foeign concept to them.

For some reason, I get a deep chuckle out of that (kind of like laughing at the little idiots); then I realize how ironic that is.

Yep I'm on my own...I'm live in Canada in the city of Toronto. I learned from This site, books, and the internet.

Hello all. I'm new to this forum (this is my first post). I'm just starting to get "into this stuff" (producing trance) and am not entirely clear on where the line is drawn between DJing and Producing. Can some please elaborate for me?

Correct me I'm wrong: The DJ's role is performance (playback or manipulation in real time), whereas the producer's role is composition (doing things in a studio be it remixing or original works). If this is true, what then do you call those superstars like Armin and Tiesto? I think I usually hear them referred to as DJ's but I'm sure spend plenty of time in a studio too so are they just taking on both roles? And what exactly are they doing on that stage during their big live shows? Are they synthesizing stuff on the spot? or just live-mixing stuff that they "produced" earlier?

I just invested in cubase because I am interested to make original EDM compositions (not remixes). Where can I take this? What would you label me? I know labels generally frowned upon, but I want to know the correct terms so I can find the right resources.

Thanks in advance.

-Rob

hey foil. hey you pretty much got it right dj basiclly mix songs together , and a producers create the songs.

armin and tiesto do both in the studio there produce there own songs then when the play out "live" the are playing there own songs and other peoples.

i remember when i first started to get into hiphop years ago i heard that producers would make beats with turntables. it blew my mind cuz i always wondered how the got so many sounds on the same pitch and the same speed. i figure they were using a bunch of turntables hahaha then i release the were using keyboard, drum machines, and samplers.

anyway foil good luck wth your productions and welcome to the board

Simply put. DJing is playing the records. Producing is making the records.

Most of these guys both produce and DJ.

Yes.

Most of the time they are simply mixing Records and/or CD's

Not usually.

Rarely.

Thanks for the quick response, lowski!

So how does a producer "make it"? You hear a lot about famous DJ's, but rarely about famous producers (or maybe thats just me).

And to keep this on topic, I guess I am, too, "on my own" at this stage. Aside from some classical music training in my past and a survey course on midi, books have been my guide. Then again, I havent tried real hard to reach out yet.

As in mixing other producers' Records and CD's? That sounds like a pretty cool (dare I say it: easy?) way to be earning $50k a night!

Alas, I already started down the road of producing have no desire to become a DJ...

Posted by lowski on Oct-23-2007 05:26:

yeah as for 50k a night i dont think so. unless your name is armin paul, ferry or tiesto. and even with all that im not even too sure about if they make that everytime, i really doubt it

Yea, I probably don't know what I'm talking about. I just pulled that figure from this thread though:

As far as EDM production goes, I'm SOL for finding someone to work with. Sadly, though, I'd love to throw ideas around in person or have someone who knows a bit more than me tell me when I'm screwing up. I did have the opportunity to hang out with a friend who produced for Tooth and Nail in Seattle, but we've both been away form there for a while now.

I figure once I settle down, most likely in Seattle, I'll seek out a production partner and jam.

foil, "making it" has so much to do with skill and promotion, and it's unfortunate if either is severely lacking and the other is in abundance. If someone is both a talented DJ and producer they can use each of those to promote each other. DJ so and so comes out with some banging new choon and he'll be in greater demand, so it seems. DJ so and so is spinning worldwide and has hookups to get his newer beats played out more.

When a DJ/Producer is DJing, he's a DJ. When he's producing, he's a producer. I know that sounds retarded to say here, but wasn't it the case for Tiesto that when he was DJing it was 'DJ Teisto, and when he released a track it was just 'Tiesto'?

I'm in the North Dallas area myself - over by Frisco. I've only produced for a few years, and I can only do it when I find the time. Like many of you, I too have friends that do not listen to Trance. I think I'm the only one left . I have some friends I met via the Internet that produce it and help me out quite a bit. They are a Godsend for me.

Haha, you're right over by me, I'm in South Plano.

I've always been working alone, except for two productions (1997 and 1999), I'd love to work with someone though, would have been interesting to see what it'd turn out like.

Hey guys yeah Im in the same boat. I really have no one to teach me around here but I like my club scene. I live in Miami Fl and house is big. Wish trance was bigger here but it is house genre ran mostly. I have been djing for about 6 months now running on a 1000mk3s djm800 set up and I say Im pretty decent now. I am really wanting to get into producing now but not sure what set up to run off of. Im thinking between a black mac lap top so I could also hook up to my dj equipment and record or should I get a desktop...? Thanks alot for any advice.
